Fine Art: Drawing and Painting BA(Hons)

Jenny Core graduated from Fine Art: Drawing and Painting BA(Hons) in 2009. She is now a Project Administrator in the Strategic Cultural Projects Team for Manchester City Council. The Strategic Cultural Projects Team creates and handles capital projects in the art sector for Manchester. During her time here Jenny won a couple of awards; The Rosette of Excellence from Noise Festival and the Outstanding Professionalism in the Arts from The University of Huddersfield; she also had work published in “Capture Manchester” by Cube Gallery, Manchester.

“One of my biggest experiences during my time at the University of Huddersfield was going to South Korea in my second year, as a part of the exchange programme.  It was great for cultural understanding and research for my artist practice, as well as a great life experience!

“I chose the Fine Art: Drawing and Painting course at University of Huddersfield, due to its high contact hours. The course also had a visiting artist program, which I was interested in.

“For successful graduate employment I would recommend getting as much experience in the art sector as possible during your course. This will mean a lot of voluntary work but this will be crucial for acquiring a job in the arts. The more experience you have in gallery work, the more understanding you will get on how a gallery operates. It is a great way to network, which will give you further opportunities in the future.

“I would also suggest attending networking events, such as exhibition openings and creative industry events.

“Admin experience is also required to get a job in a gallery/project management. Office experience, (judging on my previous experiences) is more often than not, favoured over gallery experience (creative experience). 

“Basically, get as much experience as you possibly can!”
