Product Design BSc(Hons) student, Matthew Harris has won the Product Design Northern Designers 2009 Award. His winning design, the Induction Kettle is pictured right. On his success and experience at the awards ceremony Matthew said:

"I was delighted to be chosen from over 2,000 entrants, over five categories to become a finalist in the Northern Design competition. The Northern Design competition was a great opportunity for design graduates to exhibit their work and get valuable feed back. It was hugely encouraging to see an event outside of London that focused on the talent in the North, which is so often overlooked. The huge array of skills on show proved that the North can produce some very talented graduates. Two of my fellow Product Design students from the University of Huddersfield were also short-listed in the same category, which made the evening even more entertaining. It acted as a reward for the all the hard work we had put into to our projects over the last year. It felt great to have my work recognised in such a competitive field for a project that was so exciting to develop.

"The awards evening was a fantastic opportunity to discuss my work with a variety of people. It was also exciting to step back from an intensive and challenging project, and endeavour to explain the three months’ worth of work to a wide audience in just a few minutes. The highly positive feedback I received made the hard work worthwhile. The event has given me more confidence in my abilities and has reinforced my ambition for a career in design."
