The school also offers a one year full-time or two year part-time MA/MSc by research. You will be appointed a supervisor/s who will supervise your master’s work. This award is particularly flexible allowing you master’s study tailored to your individual needs. These awards are particularly suitable where you have to balance your professional life with on-going research study.

The award is in recognition of the successful completion of an approved programme of training and research, which combines advanced study, research methodology and a substantial research project/s. Your research work can be realised through a thesis, or in combination with practice.

Entry Requirements

The normal entry requirement is a first degree (equivalent to a UK Honours Bachelor or equivalent from a recognised institution). Applications from candidates holding qualifications other than the above will be considered on their merits and in relation to the nature and scope of the programme of work proposed.

Applications are welcome for research across the broad range subjects for which we can offer research supervision within the school. Our supervisors provide expertise in areas such as fine art, digital media design, architecture, textiles, design theory, fashion, graphic design, product design, and design business. Research is structured through an individual programme of research supervised by a team of supervisors. We encourage and recognise a broad understanding and application of research, both practice-based or thesis only.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a first or second-class honours degree. Applications from candidates holding qualifications other than the above will be considered on their merits and in relation to the nature and scope of the programme of work proposed.

All candidates must meet the minimum english language requirements as described by the University’s admissions policy. International students whose first language or language of instruction is not English should have also passed an English Language qualification. (TOEFL 550 score minimum and IELTS 6 minimum will be considered acceptable).

For candidates holding an appropriate Master's degree by research or examination, direct enrolment for the degree of PhD may be possible.

The school considers research degree applications throughout the year but enrolment is limited to the following dates:

  • 2 January
  • 1 April
  • 1 July
  • 1 October
