Academy for the Study of Britishness

Identity and the 'Other British Isles'

23 - 25  June 2010

As issues of nationalism, identity, and what it means to be ‘British’ continue to affect the cultural and political landscape of Britain itself, its impact on the islands that share (or have shared) a cultural heritage with the United Kingdom has become new ground for academics. This conference brought together research from a range of disciplines (including anthropology, geography, literature, history, business, and politics) in order to explore issues of Britishness within island culture and society. See the schedule here.

Conference highlights included:

  • Papers about languages, culture, history, politics, tourism, class, hybridity, literature, multiple identities, postcolonialisms and war in Cyprus, Malta, Tasmania, Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Granada, the Falklands, Jamaica, Heligoland, Shetland, Jersey, Anglesey, Orkney, Man and Guernsey;
  • Keynote presentations from Stephen Royle (Professor of Island Geography, Queen's University, Belfast) Judith Okely (Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Hull University) about the Isle of Wight and Paul Sanders (Associate Professor at ESC Bourgogne, Dijon) about the Channel Islands;
  • UK launch of British Imperialism in Cyprus, 1878-1915 by Andrekos Varnava (Manchester University Press).
