You may have heard that the UK Government has made some changes to the student finance arrangements and are wondering what this means if you come to the University of Huddersfield in 2009/10. We’ve put together the key facts to help you understand what’s new, what extra financial help is available directly from the University of Huddersfield and where to go for more info.
That means you will not have to find money to pay your tuition fees before or during your studies.
New loans are available to cover the cost of tuition fees. You will only start to repay once you have finished your course and are earning over the amount prescribed by the UK Government to your country. In order to defer the tuition fee, you will need to apply for a fee loan from the Student Loan Company. At the same time an income test will be carried out in order to receive the University of Huddersfield bursary (a non-repayable grant).
...that all students starting in September 2009 and from within the European Union will be entitled to financial support:
£500 for students with a family income up to £25000 (subject to eligibility)
Please note students from the European Union will only be entitled to the government grant if they have lived in the UK for a minimum of three years.
The amount you pay back per week is determined by how much you earn, not by how much you owe. Whatever your income, the repayments are affordable. Debt can be a worry – but a student loan is not like any other sort of debt. It is not like a mortgage where the larger your loan, the larger your monthly repayments. Nor a credit card where you may be charged interest several times higher than the rate of inflation. Instead, the amount you owe is linked to inflation and only increases in line with the cost of living.
You may wish to pay part or whole fees upfront. There is a question on the form when applying for a fee loan from the Student Loan Company concerning the percentage of the fee you wish to defer.
By charging the £3225 tuition fee (09/10 undergraduate annual fee), the University of Huddersfield can provide the resources, staff contact and support you need and deserve. It pays for a quality experience of Higher Education. The new fee system allows us to invest even more in improved library, computing and laboratory facilities. It means that you will benefit from more contact with academic staff, first-class equipment and an attractive learning environment.
There is NO fee charged for the placement year on a sandwich course, the student would work in industry earning a salary for one year, with free academic support.
Final note: all our postgraduate courses at this School cost £4000 for 2009/10
