About Us

Quality CoursesCanalside West

All courses are accredited where necessary by the appropriate professional bodies:

  • our BEng/MEng engineering courses are fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
  • our ICT and Computing courses meet the requirements of professional institutions such as the British Computer Society (BCS)

As such, Computing and Engineering has an enviable reputation for quality.

When inspected by the UK Government’s Quality Assurance Agency, our Electronic Engineering Department was graded 24/24, the highest grade possible and our Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Department was Commended in all areas, again the highest award. Our Computing Department will be inspected in the next two years.

We consistently score very highly for student satisfaction in the annual National Student Survey.

Quality Research

Professor Jiang

In the last Research Assessment Exercise our Mechanical and Automotive research and Centre for Precision Technology (CPT) was graded 4.

Professor Jiang is one of the top researchers within the School of Computing and Engineering's Centre for Precision Technologies.

In 1999 she was awarded the prize for the Chinese Engineering Research Student of the Decade by the Chinese Government for what was considered the best doctoral dissertation during the 1990s and has recently been awarded a very prestigious Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award.

Two research students won scholarships to work on short term contracts to NASA in 2003/4 and one of our research students was elected the British Computer Society's Young Professional of the Year 2004. Research software called 'GIPO' developed in-house won an award at the First International Competition on Knowledge Engineering for Planning and Scheduling, held at Monterey, California in June 2005.

Work Placements

The University is one of the UK's top 10 providers of sandwich courses, which is one of the reasons why we comfortably exceed the national average for graduate employment. Over 94% of graduates go straight into a job or further study. Computing and Engineering is a leader and innovator in sandwich education within the University. All our undergraduate degrees feature a one year work placement for home or international students, some of whom choose to work in another country or their home country. Computing and Engineering employs a dedicated team of 4 staff to help students secure the right kind of work placement. Academic staff are appointed to visit students on placement, wherever that may be in the world. Every year we place up to 200 computing and engineering students for 12 months in industry. Salaries in the placement year are excellent. The experience gained by our students on placement makes them very attractive to employers.Student Services Jobshop
