Project Title: Dynamic Acoustic Arrays for Intelligent Monitoring

Project Description:
The monitoring of machines or facilities is crucial in their maintenance and optimal performance. The use of acoustic emission signals has been proved as a promising technique in such applications. Nevertheless, background noise and acoustic effects caused by enclosures tend to monitoring systems.

This project aims to develop acoustic arrays and signal analysis techniques that enhance the detection of a quiet signal amidst loud noise generated by other close proximity noise sources. The application of such technology is important in detecting faults in large engines or factory floors with a large number of machines.

The application of intelligent systems, such as neural networks and independent component analysis, will be employed to develop acoustic arrays that effectively increase the gain for a particular direction allowing the detection of independent acoustic sources.

This project is developed as a collaboration between the Music Technology and the Diagnostics Engineering Research Groups.

A successful candidate will have an academic background in engineering, science or maths. Previous programming experience is desired.

Entry requirements: The standard entry requirement for PhD study is a First or Upper Second class honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in a relevant subject. In certain circumstances, a Lower Second class honours degree supplemented by a Masters degree, or appropriate relevant work experience, may be acceptable.
