Using University E-mail via the web

Accessing HUMS via the Web

To access your HUMS mail account from a computer that is connected to the Internet, you can use a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari to open your mailbox.

It is recommended that you use Internet Explorer 5 or above to obtain the full functionality of the client (Premium version).

If you experience slow performance from the Outlook Web Client, you can use the "Lite" version. For details of how to access this click here.

Logging-in Instructions

From the web browser enter the following address:

http://mail.hud.ac.uk/

Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) is no longer available. If you use a Windows Mobile PDA or SmartPhone you use ActiveSync using mail.hud.ac.uk as the server name. For Apple iPhone users, you need iTunes 7.7 and OS 2.0 to use Exchange ActiveSync.

A login box will appear, requesting your username and password.

Enter ad\username and password into the login box, then click OK. E.g.:

(login box example image)
  • Please note that your username will be different to the one shown in this example. You should type in the same username & password that you use, when on campus.
  • Username can be preceded with ad\
  • Remember: Your password is case-sensitive
  • Client version can be Premium or Basic where Basic is a cut down version of OWA for slow connections, Premium is the full client.
  • For Security, please use the default Public option so that your username and password are not stored on the PC.

N.B.: The web email client does not offer all the functions of the software that you would use on a PC on the campus. In particular, personal address books are not available, although the alternative contacts will be available. Opening another user's Inbox or Calendar is possible by opening a new browser window or tab and enter http://mail.hud.ac.uk/exchange/alias (where alias is name of the other mailbox).

Folder pages

When you open a folder the messages are loaded in groups as separate web pages. On the email toolbar there is a navigator that shows which page you are currently seeing and allows you to move backwards and forwards through the folder's pages.

Use your browser's reload or refresh button to keep your mailbox display up to date.

Logging off

When you have finished, you should log out of your mailbox by clicking Log Off , which appears on the bar at the left of the window, and then close down your web browser. If you are connected via a modem and therefore incurring phone charges, you may wish to cut and paste messages to and from another application such as Word, so that you can read and write offline.

Outlook Lite Version

Some customers, particularly those who use a dial-up connection to access the internet, find that when they access their university email through http://mail.hud.ac.uk, it is sometimes slower than expected.

The cause of this can be down to many factors e.g. The spec of your PC, your Internet Service Provider, what version of Web Browser you are using etc.

Only Internet Explorer 5 or later can use the Premium version of Outlook Web Access. Other browsers such as Firefox or Safari will use the Basic version automatically.

In order to address this issue, you can select the Outlook Web Access Light option when you login to Outlook Web Access. The  light version has less features than the full or Premium version, and is intended only for those users who genuinely experience slow performance.
