IT Support

IT Support can help staff with IT problems relating to using PCs running the standard staff desktop.

On days that the University is open, the IT Support helpdesk based at Huddersfield operates between the hours of 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday. Outside these hours calls to 3737 are diverted to a 24hr telephone service operated from Northumbria University by NORMan who are able to handle and resolve the majority of calls.

The IT Support helpdesk is busiest in the morning between 9am and 12 noon, if we are unable to take your call please leave a voicemail message with as much of the following information as possible and we will return your call.

  • Your name and login ID
  • A contact telephone number and your location
  • A brief description of your problem (including any error messages)

Alternatively, if your problem is less urgent:

Email IT Support with a brief description of your problem including any error messages. We aim to respond to your email as quickly as possible. This will be no longer than 4 working hours during our normal working time of 8am-4pm Mon-Fri.

Or just text Staff followed by your message to 81025.

IT Support provides help with IT & AV problems in the following pooled rooms:

IT Support also provide support with IT & AV problems in the following rooms.

  • The SDG Large Conference room (CS7/08)
  • The SDG IT Training Room.
  • The SDG Training Room.
  • CS Videoconferencing Room (CS1/01)
  • CS Meeting Room 2 (CS1/02)

Please call to discuss any requirements you may have in these rooms. You can also report IT & AV faults in any of these rooms to IT Support

IT Support can also provide the following equipment for loan

Presentation equipment
Portable data projectors & projection screens

Plasma screens on high level trolley

PA speaker system including radio mics & CD Player

Portable induction loop

Lecture Capture

The following rooms are equipped with a Lecture Capture System.

  • The SDG Large Conference room (CS7/08)
  • CWS/10
  • CS4/20, Castle Hill room
  • CSLG/01, The George Buckley Lecture Theatre, Commercial Street

The system can record whatever is displayed on the projection screen, along with audio from the system speakers and lectern or radio microphones in the room.

The finished recording can be accessed via the Unitube video streaming service.

You will have to request this service, as recording is switched off by default.

If you would like to arrange for your event or lecture to be recorded, call IT Support, Computing Services on 3737. Please give notice of at least 1 working day before the event or lecture takes place.

Laptops
Laptop computers running standard staff desktop applications are available for loan to staff for use on campus primarily as a temporary replacement for a faulty desktop PC, this will normally be for less than 5 days. IT Support can also supply laptop computers for basic wireless Internet access for events on campus.

Computer accounts

IT Support create staff login accounts, mailboxes, shared mailboxes and shared distribution lists. Staff will normally automatically have an account created if IT Support are notified via HR.

For certain categories of staff who already have a staff ID card, for example part-time lecturers and research students who are undertaking teaching, IT Support will not be notified via HR, it is recommended that the new staff account form is completed & returned to IT Support.

Any accounts required for those who are not employed by the University, but who have a relationship with it should be requested via the affiliate request form.

Shared mailboxes can be requested using the New Generic mailbox form.

New shared distribution lists can be requested using the New Distribution list form

Disposal of IT equipment

IT Support can help you dispose of any redundant IT or electrical equipment that is at the end of its life:

  • Call. us on 3737.
  • Arrange for Campus Support (call 2550) to take the equipment to our secure storage container (we can do this if you prefer).
  • Our disposal agents collect the waste for reuse and recycling, disposing of the waste under WEEE regulations and notify us of the serial numbers of any equipment they have collected and disposed of. Our disposal agents fully erase any data from PC hard drives.
