This course will give you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required in today's fast moving business arena and will help prepare you for a career in business or financial industries. If you know that you want a career in business, then this course can provide you with a solid business foundation and also give you the flexibility to specialise in the final year in modules such as monetary and financial framework, investment and portfolio management, and strategic management. It will help prepare you for employment in a variety of functions including marketing, finance and operations in large organisations or small businesses. The course has an international reputation attracting students from the UK and Europe. It has also developed links with partner institutions which means that you may have the opportunity to take up an overseas study placement during the second year.

Economics of Business
This module helps provide you with an understanding of what drives economic activity in markets and business and will explain the analytical framework which determines policy within in the macro economy and the international economy. You’ll have the opportunity to apply economic analysis to business problems and current macroeconomic issues.
Business & Management Environment
The module is intended to provide a topical introduction to the business environment and how we, individuals can view, interact with and then take our place in business. The aim of this module is to help provide a basic understanding of the theory and factors that interact with business and prompt discussions as to how these affect the business organisation, ethics, corporate activities and social responsibility (CSR) and the future consequences on the business environment. Moreover, this module will introduce you to place more emphasis on critical thinking and analytical reasoning of the recent business issues, and identify and analyse phenomena in the modern business environment. This module includes Personal Development Plan to encourage you to think about your own transferable skills in the context of becoming part of business workforce through identifying your experience, reflecting on your learning so that you can plan towards your goals and aspirations.
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to marketing theory and practice, as well as a range of market research techniques. You’ll learn how organizations identify and understand their customers and how they use these insights to develop marketing strategies to compete in their markets.
Accounting for Managers (Foundation)
This module introduces you to how financial information for businesses is prepared, presented and interpreted by internal and external users. As well as delivering theory and technical information, practical application is presented through worked examples, group working and discussions.
Introduction to Financial Services
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the global financial markets, together with an overview of current developments. You’ll learn how the financial services sector channels investments and financial instruments around the world and have the opportunity to understand how individuals, corporations and countries raise and move funds around international markets and financial exchanges.
Personal Financial Planning
This module introduces you to key areas in financial services. The module looks at the regulatory framework of the financial services sector. It also introduces the various financial services products available to the consumer. You will be introduced to areas of personal tax which are relevant to financial services advisors, and have the opportunity to develop an awareness of current financial issues.
Developments in Banking and Finance
This module covers current and topical developments in the world of banking and financial markets, including retail and investment banking, financial intermediaries and stock markets. A key theme is the application of theory to real-world practice.
Management and Research Methods
This module introduces you to the theory and practice of research methods to learn and identify the different techniques, philosophies and methods researchers need to understand to conduct high quality research.
This module introduces the key discipline of business operations. Operations relates to the delivery of products and services, through the use of important planning and control techniques. After a general introduction to the concept some of the most important techniques will be covered such as capacity management, inventory management and quality.

Cross Cultural Management
In today’s globalised world, a large majority of companies have offices dispersed across countries, cultures and time zones. Managers of these companies are increasingly engaging in business activities with people from different cultural backgrounds. The ability to navigate across cultures has become a desirable quality for all internationally active companies and institutions. This module aims to equip students with the essential knowledge in cross-cultural management and develop their skills and competence in dealing with intercultural situations. Studying this module will create a solid basis for operating management tasks at an international level.
Small Business Enterprise and Planning
This module gives an introduction to the tools and techniques associated with Business Planning at both strategic and operational levels. In term two the focus changes to be more specifically related to small and medium sized enterprises using some examples from well-known companies. The tutorials feature a ‘hands on’ approach to a small business experience with the teams acting as the directors of a small business.
Year 3 - optional placement year
The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.
Dissertation projects are wide ranging and you are encouraged to work in areas of particular interest. In order to support you in the research process you are required to submit an outline reseach proposal by the beginning of November in the final year. The research proposal for the dissertation is to be submitted by week 10 of the Autumn term. The research project must be written up using an appropriate format.
This module highlights the role of strategic management in organisations and helps make you aware of the key strategic management approaches that assist managers in delivering both short and long term aims, goals and objectives for the organisation. It is underpinned by theory that then provides a tool kit for strategic analysis and demonstrates how this can aid management teams make business decisions in today’s complex and turbulent environments.
The module examines a range of strategic issues facing organisations and discusses the alternative strategic responses which may be available to them.
Monetary and Financial Framework
This module helps you to develop an advanced understanding of central banking, financial markets and regulatory practice. Theory, policy and practice are explored to keep apace with fast moving and ever changing business environments.
Investment and Portfolio Management
You will have an opportunity to study investment analysis and portfolio management, using an innovative experiential learning environment – “The Portfolio Game”. This providing you with the opportunity for personal development whilst developing a critical appreciation of the features of managing a successful investment portfolio.
Marketing for Small Business
Marketing is important, entrepreneurship is vital, and 95% of businesses anywhere in the world are small. When large organisations seek to improve performance – they often turn to the young dynamic small businesses as their role model. We weave these themes together into what can be called entrepreneurial marketing.
Retailers are powerful brands within their own right. How is the customer changing and how do retailers anticipate this change? You'll investigate the various elements employed to formulate retail strategy including sales channels, the supply chain, distribution, costing structures, product development, category management, promotional techniques and internationalisation.
Direct and Digital Marketing
The module is structured to provide students with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of direct, social and digital marketing, and its implementation. Students are introduced to relevant theories underpinning the techniques, and are required to develop effective direct marketing strategies and plans, ranging from target selection to implementation and control. In addition to this, students will be introduced into how digital and social media are used within effective direct marketing campaigns.
During the first half of this module a theoretical framework, based on core principles, is introduced. The framework enables you to explore the causes, impacts and potential solutions to various environmental problems. The second half of the module explores how environmental management works in practice in businesses and organisations. A key part of this is understanding how environmental management systems, specifically, ISO14001 work.
This module considers the fundamental issue of competitiveness and helps you to consider a strategic perspective on globalisation. You'll explore the benefits of location (such as costs, consumer preferences and technology) and the internationalisation of business through the impact of multinationals and global supply chains. In term 2 you'll focus on international business functions such as marketing and human resources.
Business and the Entrepreneur
Entrepreneurship, enterprise and innovation are all key words in contemporary business. This module considers the theory and practice of entrepreneurship in the current world business climate. Together we range from the large corporation to the small business and from the UK to the Far East.
This module considers the issues relating to Business and the Environment in a European context. It relates to the role of legislation and market forces in the important area of sustainable development. As it is a current issue presentation topics are selected by you bringing in current articles from the press related to environmental issues and we group them into relevant topic areas.
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the theory and practice of social entrepreneurship. Key differences and similarities between business and social entrepreneurs will be investigated and exemplified. The module will equip students with the necessary tools, techniques and knowledge for them to demonstrate their comprehension of social entrepreneurship at a number of different levels within local and global society.
Business Responsibility & Sustainability
This module explores how social, economic and environmental responsibilities are incorporated into the business organisations. It adopts a complementary approach and builds upon existing management and strategy modules, focusing specifically on corporate responsibility and sustainability dimensions in global business organisations. This module consists of two distinct but related elements, the first will examine the concept of corporate responsibility, its applicability in the context of a business organisation and the challenges of managing it in a globalised world. The second will address sustainability and sustainable development and its implications for business operations. This module is part of the University of Huddersfield’s commitment to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).
Business information Management
This module will help equip you with the skills and knowledge to take part in the analysis and design of business systems. You’ll understand how internet based business systems and enterprise wide systems such as stock, sales and purchase systems can be integrated and identify management information for monitoring, planning and control of a business unit.
People Management and Business
This module will look at the role of work in organisations and in society as a whole. Contemporary issues are explored and topics typically include the future of work, gender and work, the relationship between work and non-work, the labour process and unemployment.
Cross Cultural Studies
This module considers the influence that national culture has on behaviour and the implications of this for organisational design and management. The impact that working across national cultures is considered and how the cross cultural manager can be supported in a changing environment. A blend of theory and practice engages the learner in a range of organisational and cultural settings.
E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services, over an electronic network, primarily the Internet. For many organisations e-commerce has become an essential aspect of their business allowing them to provide value and services that are different from their offline counterparts. In order to understand the e-commerce environment this module will develop your understanding of online business, the importance of developing business and revenue models, the rise of electronic commerce in the knowledge economy and the changing face of marketing to support your business awareness.
Digital And Social Media Marketing
Digital Marketing is a term which encapsulates the targeted, measurable and interactive marketing of products and services through the use of the internet. This module will investigate and explore a variety of digital and social media marketing tools and their implementation within a practical context. In addition this module will help develop your understanding of online consumer behaviour, organisational marketing strategy and online decision making through the use of Web analytics. You will also cover the practical aspects of online brand development and have the opportunity to gain an understanding of integrated marketing campaigns, search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media.
Advanced Operations Management
In this module you’ll study operations and processes management as well as gain an understanding of the nature of improvement implementations in organisations. This will be achieved through the assessment of different business improvement methods and performance measurement models, such as: TQM, BPR, Six-Sigma, Lean and JIT and also look at methods such as the EFQM, Shingo and Malcolm Baldrige. You’ll explore these concepts through case studies, simulations, group tasks videos.

The Business Studies programme will provide exemption from some of the requirements of the Association of Project Management. There will also be the opportunity to progress to our Master's in Business Project Management which will provide further exemptions.
This course will also enable you to obtain exemptions from some of the requirements of the Chartered Insurance Institute, as well as some of the accounting bodies.
Teaching and assessment
You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, assignments, exams, individual projects and a management training programme. Assessment will include exams, short-answer questions, essays, in-class tests, verbal presentations, group projects, clinical case studies, reflective portfolios and a dissertation.

In 2017/18, the tuition fee for UK and EU students at the University of Huddersfield will be £9,250.
