About the course

We are proud that our course currently:

•  Offers a wide range of option modules providing the opportunity to devise a course that meets your individual needs.

•  Recognises your prior learning and may allow you to build on existing academic Master's level credit (for example Supporting Learning in Practice or Independent and Supplementary Prescribing) from this and other universities to obtain a Master's degree, subject to APL regulations.

•  Can be completed at a pace that suits you and provides you with an excellent support network. Normally this course is completed in 3 academic years but students must complete their course in 6 academic years.

•  Is delivered by staff with specialist expertise within a range of areas, who are all actively involved in research, ensuring the course is up to date and informed by evidence.

•  Has a key focus on helping you to further develop your knowledge and practice related to health and healthcare.

•  Provides you with the opportunity to network with professionals from different disciplines and share best practice.

The course offers professionals from a variety of multidisciplinary backgrounds the opportunity to further develop and extend their particular area of practice. The course aims to increase the depth and breadth of your knowledge in health studies helping you to function at the leading edge of practice development and research. You will also have the opportunity to broaden your understanding and knowledge of global healthcare issues by studying with health professionals from elsewhere in the world.

Entry requirements

•  Applicants must currently work in a health or social care setting. You must be registered with a relevant statutory body such as the NMC or HCPC if you would like to undertake modules linked to UK professional body recognition.

•  International students must be registered with a relevant professional body in their country of origin and will not be eligible for any NMC or HCPC recognition whilst undertaking this course or on its completion.

•  An Honours degree (2:2 or above) or an equivalent professional qualification appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed.

•  For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent. If you have alternative qualifications or do not meet the IELTS requirement we also offer a range of Pre-Sessional English Programmes.

•  You may be eligible to gain accreditation for your prior learning towards this course.

Course content

Year 1

Critical Appraisal of Research Literature

In this module you will be encouraged to develop your understanding of methodological design. You will study the critical appraisal of a variety of aspects of published quantitative and qualitative research in practice settings, and will consider the utilisation of your knowledge and skills in future career developments, through pursuing autonomous practice and agenda setting in your profession. You will be assessed through one piece of coursework.

Plus 45 credits from Specialist Skills and Post-Registration Development (SSPRD) modules depending on credit size appropriate to your profession.

Year 2

Research Project Preparation

This module provides the opportunity for you to develop the knowledge and skills required to design ethical and feasible research projects relevant to your practice, role or academic studies. You will also explore the different aspects involved when designing a research proposal. Assessment will involve producing one piece of coursework, in the form of a research proposal which addresses a particular practice need within your clinical area.

Please check the entry requirements for any module that you would like to study to ensure that you have the required professional registration and can meet all conditions, for example access to mentors, medical supervisors, students or patients, DBS checks, and practice.

Year 3

Project (Health Related)

This module involves the development of a working proposal, which may or may not be related to your place of work, facilitated with learning materials and procedural guidance made available electronically. In addition you will be required to attend regular meetings with a named supervisor, who will be either a subject specialist or researcher in the field. You will be assessed through submission of coursework in the form of a project.

Compulsory practice elements may exist in some of the option modules and alternative modules may be available to accommodate international students.

Career opportunities

The course offers you the opportunity to further develop your current knowledge and practice to an advanced level, which may enable you to undertake a lead role in your practice and enhance your career.

Teaching and assessment

The modules are delivered through a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, simulation, e-learning, case-based tutorials and problem based learning. Assessment involves a variety of methods including action plans, oral examinations, practical examinations and written examinations, learning contracts, reports and written essays and e-portfolio.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

*permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching.

Additional routes

Interim awards A Master's course is 180 Master's level credits, which would normally take three calendar years part-time study. Interim awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level or Postgraduate Diploma level should you decide to exit the course early.
