About the course

The overall aim of the course is to educate individuals as managers and improve the quality of management as a profession within healthcare settings. The course provides an integrated and critical understanding of management and organisations and to help prepare you for effective management roles within a healthcare environment. There are four main objectives:

•  The advanced study of leadership and management of organisations and the changing external context in which healthcare organisations operate.

•  Preparation for and/or development of a career in healthcare management by developing skills at a professional or equivalent level.

•  Development of the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of business and management to complex issues, both systematically and creatively to improve business and management practice.

•  Enhancement of lifelong learning and personal development so far as to be able to work with self-direction and originality and to contribute to healthcare management and society at large.

Entry requirements

•  An Honours degree (2:2 or above) and a minimum of 3 years appropriate management or business experience from a health or social care context.

•  If you have significant management experience you may be admitted to the course without a degree or equivalent qualifications if you can demonstrate your potential to meet the learning requirement of the programme. Eligibility will be determined by means of an interview with the admissions tutor, where you will need to demonstrate the extent of your managerial experience, continuing professional development and the ability to contribute to and benefit from the course course

Course content

You study the following modules:

Personal and Professional Development

This module encourages students to explore models of personal and professional development and engage with the process in a constructive way. As a flavour, the module considers: lifelong learning, continuing professional development, the learning cycle, learning styles, personal development planning.

Participants will submit a personal development portfolio and an individual or group presentation of 20 minutes, which addresses issues of professional development.


Leading Teams

This module is considers practical skills for developing effective working relationships with specific reference to leading teams within the organisation. We review the nature interpersonal management from Organisation Behaviour and Human Resource Management perspectives. The module is assessed via a case study.


Managing and Developing Activities

The module is designed to provide a practical approach to strategic and operational continuous improvement and the improvement of performance. To enable effective management of operational and strategic activities, the content provides the underpinning knowledge of data analysis and improvement techniques. The assessment is an action based project based on the student’s own organisation to integrate the continuous improvement focus and the information for decision making themes in the module.


Contemporary Healthcare Issues for Managers

The module explores current ‘hot topics’ within the Health and Social Care sector through a series of regular lectures and guest speakers to extend participants knowledge of management practice beyond their own experience. Students are encouraged to integrate the theoretical and conceptual aspects of the course with management practice in healthcare settings.


Continuous Professional Development

This module facilitates your learning and personal development, integrating an understanding of academic theory with employment experience. You will audit your professional development by evaluating a range of models to identify development areas through a process of goal setting. You will create learning contracts which are contextualised and then evidenced through a reflective portfolio.

The module is assessed via a reflective portfolio of 5000 words (worth 100% of the module marks)


Strategic Thinking in a Healthcare Context

This module explores the nature of strategic thinking and strategic management in a range of organisations. We use strategy theories and concepts to evaluate: strategy creation, strategic choice, strategy implementation and organisational learning. The assessment strategy combines a case study analysis and a reflective statement.


Commissioning and Procurement

This module covers Commissioning and Procurement, which have become a very central aspect of the modern health service.Commissioning determines the who, what, why, when, how of health service provision and as such is concerned with the most fundamental elements in the implementation of healthcare delivery. Then as an extended part of the commissioning process is the actual purchasing, or procurement, of the service provider and their services.


Managing Planned Change using Project Frameworks

This module assesses the role of project management frameworks and concepts in conceptualisIng and managing planned change within organisations; particular attention is given to project management - both organisational and inter-organisational - within the public sector.

Consideration is given to the wider political and strategic context and how these impact upon the technical and behavioural aspects of change. The module analyses the complexities of managing change from both human and technical perspectives, drawing on theories of change management and through the use of project and process management tools. The syllabus draws on real life examples with a view to raising the learners’ appreciation of, and opportunities for, participation in projects within their organisations.


Postgraduate Dissertation Proposal

This module considers how to draft, frame and research a topic on an area of interest. It is a precursor to the dissertation module and equips you to understand both research methods and philosophy. The main research philosophies together with the actual practical means of carrying out business research will be explored.

A written dissertation proposal helps you set out your research ideas and explain your chosen research philosophy and methods. A poster visually depicting your research area, methodology and philosophy will also be submitted.


Postgraduate Dissertation

This is a self-initiated theoretical and investigative piece of research that offers you an opportunity to research a topic related to your subject in the form of a written dissertation (15,000 words).

In consultation with an allocated supervisor, you agree a suitable research agenda which will allow you to demonstrate a high level of research, analytical and presentational skills. This builds upon the ideas generated from previous study on the dissertation proposal agenda which will allow you to demonstrate a high level of research, analytical and presentational skills.


Ethical Leadership

This module considers business as a socially responsible activity through which improvement and sustainability are rooted in ethical awareness and action. Students consider what constitutes a responsible business, what the global impact of business is, and whether ethical businesses can be commercially successful whilst critically engaging their own values through reflexivity and a critically evaluative case analysis for assessment.

The course is delivered by block mode attendance.

Teaching and assessment

Each module has its own specification on how learning outcomes are assessed. These include individual assignments and reports, group projects, learning contracts, portfolios, presentations and a professional dissertation. The mix of assessment methods is designed to promote personal and professional development in a manner which is both rigorous and transparent.

Facilities

The £17m Business School is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop.

All teaching rooms are high quality and the school has a number of computer labs for teaching or for students' individual or group use. You'll have comprehensive access to online resources through Unilearn, an online learning environment which gives access to all the study materials you'll need.

The Street Café is a perfect area for socialising, networking and relaxation over a wide range of fresh food, hot and cold drinks and free wi-fi. Set in landscaped grounds by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the Business School is in close proximity to the Library and Student Central which offers a number of places to eat, areas to socialise with friends, the Students' Union, student services and modern sporting and fitness facilities.

If you returning to study after some time you'll be able to access advice and support from our Learning Development Group. They can provide advice on how to improve your academic work including writing assignments, referencing, research skills, presentation skills and time management.

The University of Huddersfield campus is located in the town centre allowing you easy access from public transport (the bus and rail stations are no more than 10-15 minutes walk away) and the major road and motorway networks across West Yorkshire. The Business School is centrally located on the campus with the library and student centre just a few minutes away.

Other information

The course is modular leading to an MSc in Healthcare Management (180 Masters level credits), however students on exit may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Management if they successfully attain at least 120 level credits or a Postgraduate Certificate if they attain at least 60 level credits.
