Entry Requirements

  • You must have satisfied the requirements of the academic stage of legal education and be enrolled as a student member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
  • You will normally hold a recognised law degree or have gained the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law equivalent.
  • Certain non-graduates may also be eligible.

Please check the acceptability of your qualifications with the SRA. It will be your responsibility to ensure that you are eligible to attend a Legal Practice Course in accordance with the SRA's Training Regulations.

Introduction

The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is compulsory for intending solicitors and is validated by the Legal Practice Course Board of the SRA. The LPC is led by quality staff - the majority are qualified solicitors with considerable experience in practice. The course leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

The course has a dedicated base room with excellent IT facilities and is ideal in meeting your career aspirations in the legal profession, whether with a commercial firm or in general practice.

Course Structure

The full-time course commences with a three week core period, where you are introduced to the pervasive topics of Professional Conduct, European Community Law and Human Rights and Solicitors' and Business Accounts.

You will also study Probate and Administration of Estates and receive preliminary instruction in Revenue Law and the prescribed skills of advocacy, interviewing, writing, drafting and research.

Compulsory areas:
Following the core period you will study the three compulsory areas of Business Law, Civil and Criminal Litigation, and Property Law and Practice over a period of 17 weeks. The part-time course is taught on one afternoon and one evening per week over two years.

Elective areas:
You can complete the course by studying three elective areas selected from the following list:

  • Family Law
  • Insolvency Law
  • Employment Law
  • Commercial Law
  • Commercial Property
  • Private Client: Wills and Estate Planning
  • Immigration and Asylum Law

Electives are designed to provide a balance between commercial and private client areas and to cater for all career aspirations. The availability of elective subjects will depend on demand. Contact the Admissions Tutor for details of the part-time course structure.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught through a mixture of large and small group sessions with an emphasis on practical small group work.

Other Information

Teaching will take place in the Firth Street Building on the University's Queensgate campus, conveniently situated in the centre of Huddersfield and easily accessible by public transport. You will have the use of a dedicated base room with state-of-the-art IT facilities, practitioner library and workroom stocked with practitioner works, the Law School’s own audio-visual suite and mock Court Room with advocacy training facilities.
