Entry Requirements

For MSc one of the following is required:

  • An Honours degree or postgraduate diploma or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an Honours degree.
  • Other qualifications or experience which demonstrate knowledge and skills at Honours degree standard.

For PgDip one of the following is required:

  • A degree or other qualification at an equivalent level.
  • A lower level qualification together with appropriate experience.
  • Exceptionally, substantial experience alone.
  • As a general guide, you should have engineering knowledge equivalent to that of a graduate from a degree course where engineering is a predominant subject.

Introduction

This is a broad based course designed in collaboration with industry. It aims to prepare you for roles in technical design, development and project management in the areas of control systems and instrumentation by:

  • Improving technical effectiveness through the development of knowledge and skills in the broad range of technologies in control systems and instrumentation.
  • Developing effectiveness for roles in management by enhancing your knowledge and skills in relevant management disciplines.

The modular design of the course enables individuals or companies to undertake an accelerated career development programme, or update technical knowledge and skills.

Companies benefit from:

  • Improved technical and managerial effectiveness of their employees, whose services are retained during the training period.
  • The ability to offer their employees a structured career development programme.
  • New technological developments leading to greater competitiveness

Course Structure

Both the MSc and PgDip require you to study seven taught modules. The MSc then requires you to complete a major project. For the full-time course, the taught modules are delivered over two terms, with either four or three modules being studied in each, depending on the options selected. The project is normally developed over the spring term and completed over the summer term.

There is flexibility in the schedule for the part-time course, but you will typically study three or four modules in each of the first two years and then complete the project in the third year.

Modules include:

  • Major Design Project
  • Embedded Controllers
  • Computers in Control
  • Modelling of Electromechanical Control Systems
  • Signal Processing
  • Process Control and Measurement
  • Manufacturing Systems Automation
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Project Management

Part-time mode:

You will normally study four taught modules by day release in a year. Both the MSc and PgDip programmes require 105 credits to be accumulated from the taught modules. The MSc also requires the completion of a major industrial project worth 75 credits.

Modules include:

  • Major Design Project
  • Embedded Controllers
  • Computers in Control
  • Modelling of Electromechanical Control Systems
  • Signal Processing
  • Process Control and Measurement
  • Manufacturing Systems Automation
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Project Management

Teaching and Assessment

The course is taught principally through lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, seminars, computing workshops and on-site visits. The assessment emphasises the ability to apply knowledge and skills and therefore assignment work is a major feature of the course - although some modules are assessed by examination as well as by assignment.

Career Opportunities

The target role for a graduate of this course is that of a project manager in control systems and/or measurement instrumentation. The breadth of knowledge and skills in management and technology will enable you to move rapidly from a basic engineering role to a technical project management position dealing with multi-disciplinary projects.

Other Information

Industrial Involvement
Course projects are supported by many industrial organisations working in the field of engineering control systems and/or metrology. Students frequently complete part or all of their major project work on-site. These industry based projects provide dedicated resources to tackle problems in areas of strategic interest to the companies involved.
