Introduction

Forensic science involves the application of scientific techniques to criminal and civil legal cases. Although it embraces many disciplines, most practising forensic scientists are experts in one discipline.

The course provides training in analytical science, in the context of forensic science, an area which offers many job opportunities.
Key features of the course include:

  • This is a modular course with eight taught modules plus a project.
  • The emphasis is on independent learning.
  • Assessment is by assignment.

The course is designed to train you in scientific methodology relating to forensic and analytical science, extend your interest and knowledge in the subject and provide vocational support.

Course Structure

To complete the MSc course you are required to pass eight taught modules including a practical module and the project. The project requires 50 days' laboratory work and takes place during the summer, usually in an industrial placement.

We normally offer the following modules:

  • Fundamentals of Analytical Science
  • Forensic Investigation
  • Basic Instrumental Methods
  • Statistics and Computing
  • Advanced Separation Techniques
  • Advanced Methods for Organic Compounds
  • Forensic Biology
  • Practical
  • Placements and Careers (no credits awarded for these modules)

We also offer some forensic short courses in partner institutions.

Career Opportunities

Future employment in both the forensic and analytical science areas is a focus of the course.

Funding

Unfortunately we do not have any loans or bursaries for UK or EU citizens. However, applicants may apply for a Career development Loan before they accept a place on the course. Please use the following link: http://www.direct.gov.uk

There are also a number of Patrick Stewart Scholarships available and other schemes for well qualified international students.
