Introduction

Designed for graduates with a first degree in Architecture, this fully accredited course leads to registration as an architect at Master's level. The interim award of Diploma in Architecture gives exemption from Part 2 of the RIBA Examination in Architecture.

The course is based around design activity and considers the cultural, environmental and professional. The aims of the course are:

  • To reinforce your ability to produce high quality design work at Master's level.
  • To increase your knowledge and appreciation of the opportunities and constraints of practice.
  • To develop professional attitudes and to prepare you for a professional career in architecture.
  • To develop independent thought and self-motivation.
  • To generate fields of specialisms appropriate to the practice of architecture and its associated disciplines.

The first year is structured to emphasise design theory, urban issues, appropriate technology and sustainable issues as well as the enhancement of computer aided design skills. The second year concentrates on a major design thesis and a linked dissertation of your choice.

The MArch degree is awarded after a minimum further year of practical experience, coursework and examinations that provide exemption from ARB and RIBA Part 3. Both awards carry recognition under EC Directive 85/834 on architects' training.
