Entry Requirements
Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions requirements of the University of Huddersfield and the specific requirements of the course in the following ways.
The normal entry requirements are:
Prospective applicants should be (or about to become) graduates of a British university or equivalent overseas institutes of Higher Education. Preference will be given to good Honours graduates (2:2 and above), although exceptional applicants from a non-academic background will also be considered.
Competence in written and spoken English is essential. Overseas applicants are expected to have a suitable language qualification.
Exceptional candidates from non-academic backgrounds with a proven track record in industry and commerce will also be considered. Those with non-traditional backgrounds but with evidence of skill and/or a portfolio of work which meets the admission standards of the course will also be considered.
Articulation arrangements for those exceptionally entering the programme directly at PGDip or MA Phases are that candidates must satisfy the criteria for either the PGCert or PGDip Level Descriptors as APL criteria, as normal postgraduate admissions for the University of Huddersfield.
All suitably qualified applicants are normally interviewed or considered for admittance under alternative arrangements. Interview will be by portfolio of practice based and/or theoretical work and a proposal of research on application.
This course offers a cross-disciplinary international approach in an inter-disciplinary research environment encompassing research, creativity, business and creative technology (technology in the very broadest sense when creating and forming with appropriate media and engagement with emerging technologies).
The core programme is shared with other disciplines and promotes interaction and cross-disciplinary enquiry and applied creativity to contemporary art and design practice. It seeks to develop refined approaches to digital and electronic media systems together with a range of other related digital technologies, with particular emphasis on the impact of global information networks on objects, spaces and media content. The course is centred in projects which critique the social and cultural implications of technological development, its introduction and adoption in a variety of contexts.
An eclectic ‘anything goes’ approach is encouraged as a path to critical enquiry, rigorous thinking and creative energy. The blurring of disciplinary boundaries between the fields of design and the realms of art, science and technology require a questioning of the nature, role and place of the contemporary creative practitioner. Students on this course should be prepared to take their practice to a point of creative crisis and then attempt to recover this through the establishment and adoption of a philosophical stance and approach to contemporary media practices.
Teaching strategies include: lectures, tutorials and workshops. Modules are assessed on a combination of the production and critique of ‘3D related work’ and presentations, culminating in an exposition of work in the form of theoretical and/or practice based work.
There is a huge and exciting range of opportunities, both nationally and internationally, for ‘creative producers’ in media and both emerging and traditional technologies. Innovative, eclectic, creative thinkers and practitioners can make a statement in many areas of life and industry. These include: web and games design, interactive entertainment and artwork, visualisation and communication, promotion and learning, research and development.
The education sector or further doctoral study are also options.
