Prospective applicants should be (or about to become) graduates of a British university or equivalent overseas institutes of Higher Education. Preference will be given to good Honours graduates (2:2 and above), although exceptional applicants from a non-academic background will also be considered.

Competence in written and spoken English is essential. Overseas applicants are expected to have a suitable language qualification.

Exceptional candidates from non-academic backgrounds with a proven track record in industry and commerce will also be considered. Those with non-traditional backgrounds but with evidence of skill and/or a portfolio of work which meets the admission standards of the course will also be considered.

Articulation arrangements for those exceptionally entering the programme directly at PGDip or MA Phases are that candidates must satisfy the criteria for either the PGCert or PGDip Level Descriptors as APL criteria, as normal postgraduate admissions for the University of Huddersfield.

Introduction

The Fine Art Master's course embraces the diversity of art practices. You will study an in depth programme that enables the boundaries and challenges of art to be tested. The Master's experience will equip you with the professionalism to create art and exhibit at a high standard.

The course acknowledges that the importance of a reflective practice is central to being an artist. We aim to provide an opportunity where individual work can be scrutinised and supported through a developed critical framework of critiques, seminars, individual tutorials and lectures. This methodology allows the integral relationship between concept, process and realisation to be established and thoroughly investigated. This dynamic interplay does not separate practice and theory. The thesis allows you to expand a critical discourse.

The aim of the course is to assist the development of ambitious artists, helping to recognise the strengths and currency that will be central to your future career as an international artist.

Course Structure

  • Research and Enquiry (common module)
  • Creativity in Context (common module)
  • Exploration and Practice (Fine Art)
  • Applied Research and Enquiry (common module)
  • Critical Practice (Fine Art)
  • Masters Final Project/Thesis

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching strategies include: lectures, tutorials, workshops and making art. Modules are assessed on a combination of the production and critique of ‘art work’, presentations and a dissertation, culminating in an exposition of work in the form of theoretical and/or practice based work.

Career Opportunities

There is a range of opportunities, both nationally and internationally, within the art sector for ‘creative producers’. Innovative creative thinkers and practitioners are essential in many areas including: business, retail, exhibition, marketing and promotion, film/TV/stage and illustration as well as those areas thought of as being more traditional.

The education sector or further doctoral study are also options.

Funding

For details of course fees please call the Student Finance Office on 01484 473904.

Special Features

The MA course is designed on the principle of both individual and collaborative thinking and an inter-disciplinary MA community.

The course is developed through three phases and allows for the development of both personal ambitions, aspirations and the enhancement of professional or career opportunities.

Opportunities are offered for both collaboration and individual practice through both ‘common’ modules and ‘subject specific/discipline’ modules.

Graduates will be able to participate at a professional level within the Fine Art community, engaging conceptual and contextual knowledge. Combined with practical outcomes considering a cross-disciplinary approach, ideas will lead an informed practice - the outcome being realised in appropriate media.
