Entry requirements

  • A good Honours degree or equivalent in Media or a cognate subject.
  • Applications are also welcome from those holding non-standard qualifications or those who have relevant professional experience. It is not always necessary to hold a first degree.
  • Students with English as a second language are required to have an IELTS score of 6.5 minimum (or a recognised equivalent English language qualification). Pre-sessional courses are available at the University of Huddersfield.

Introduction

 If you are seeking to begin or enhance your career as a journalist in the digital age, this is the postgraduate course for you. It combines skills and theory based modules crucial to practising and understanding digital journalism in a variety of international contexts. You will benefit from being part of a lively research culture, forging contacts with students from disciplines such as History, Politics or English. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities to carry out your studies. You will study in a dynamic learning environment and be encouraged to participate in and contribute to a number of research and professional events, such as the annual Research Festival. You will also have the opportunity to organise a media research symposium and to create and administer an online news forum.

Course Structure

 The course is structured to include modules at introductory and more advanced levels of study, combining practical and theoretical approaches crucial to understanding and practising digital journalism within a range of professional contexts. The course comprises five modules which develop skills and knowledge in a range of interrelated areas: * Multi-platform Journalism * Global Journalism * Theories of Journalism * Media Analysis and Research Methods * Dissertation or Extended Case Study in Digital Journalism Applicants wishing to take a Postgraduate Certificate may take two modules (excluding the dissertation) while those opting for a Postgraduate Diploma choose two modules and a dissertation.

Teaching and Assessment

 The course is taught by experienced academics and professional journalists. Teaching is by lecture, seminar and technical workshop activities and you receive expert individual supervision while working on your research project.

Career Opportunities

 This course is ideally suited to media professionals wishing to further their knowledge of contemporary media and journalism, and recent graduates looking to enter the profession at a more specialist level.
