Master of Philosophy

Doctor of Education

Open to candidates who have successfully completed an approved programme of study in Education, this is awarded on satisfactory completion of a written thesis and oral presentation. Candidates will have critically investigated and evaluated an approved topic resulting in an independent and original contribution to knowledge and demonstrated an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field.

Master of Philosophy

With possibility of transfer to Doctor of Philosophy. This is awarded to candidates who, having critically investigated and evaluated an approved topic and demonstrated an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field, have presented and defended a thesis, by oral examination, to the satisfaction of the examiners.

Research Diploma

This is awarded to candidates who have carried out an individual investigation, collated the findings and analysed and assessed their significance and presented a well structured lucid report. The research award regulations make particular provision for individual needs. Each candidate works to an approved programme of work including appropriate schemes of postgraduate study which may be drawn from parts of existing postgraduate courses, final year degree programmes, conferences, guided reading or a combination of study methods.
The programme of research is thus assisted by these background and related studies.

Research programmes normally involve a literature survey, an experimental or hypothesis testing phase, an evaluation phase perhaps followed by further theory and experimental studies before concluding. Candidates for the degree of PhD (normally achieved by transfer from an MPhil programme after about 24 months) are required to successfully complete a programme resulting in a significant contribution to knowledge.

Supervisors

Each candidate is normally supervised by at least two supervisors. The main supervisor is the Director of Studies, the other is often supplied by the industrial, commercial, professional or research organisation collaborating with the project. This allows employees registered for a research degree to select projects relevant to the work place.
