Entry Requirements

Please see the general entry requirements page.

  • A pass in a 6-unit award in Chemistry and a pass in GCSE Mathematics at grade C or equivalent.
  • Other qualifications will be considered on merit.
  • We welcome applications from candidates with Edexcel/BTEC or non-traditional qualifications.
  • We consider all applications individually.

Introduction

This modular course is taught over two academic years. It aims to develop theoretical and practical chemistry skills as well as general personal skills. In addition you are free to pursue optional studies in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Business or Environmental Science.

We strongly recommend the optional period of work experience as a valuable addition to the HND qualification.
On obtaining an HND, many of our students obtain a BSc(Hons) degree by transferring to the final year of one of our relevant degree courses.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, seminars, demonstrations, laboratory work and library assignments. There is an increasing emphasis on student-centred learning and group work. We assess each module independently using an appropriate combination of assignments - set work, presentation, library work and laboratory exercises, and various written tests.

Career Opportunities

As the chemical industry needs technicians to work alongside graduate scientists and engineers, the range of career opportunities is very similar to those listed for the BSc Chemistry courses.

Placement

Optional work experience in either the UK or another EU country may form an additional third year of study. We strongly recommend this optional component which usually lasts 12 months. You will spend this year as a salaried employee in an approved chemical company, public authority or government department. You may choose any part of the UK or EU.

Our work experience tutors normally arrange training placements but you may arrange your own subject to approval. All students on placement receive visits from a University tutor.

Further Studies

On completion of the HND, you will have the opportunity to transfer to the final year of one of our Chemistry degree courses.
