We assess all applications individually.
Molecular and cellular biology embraces biochemistry, genetics and cell biology and seeks molecular explanations for life processes. It involves culturing bacteria, plant and animal cells and uses the techniques of cloning, sequencing and modifying genes. It has provided us with recombinant human insulin, an effective hepatitis B vaccine, as well as the technique of DNA fingerprinting used in forensic science.
Medical science has identified gene defects in diseases such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and a number of cancers, an essential first step in devising successful treatment strategies. The subject has also contributed to the development of novel crop varieties and the improvement of livestock.
The course aims to enable you to explore advances in this rapidly expanding area of biology, the techniques and concepts behind them and their impact on society. You will develop your technical and scientific competence along with your deductive, analytical and communication skills. The course has a modular structure that allows you to follow your own interests. In the final year you will undertake an extended research project in the laboratory under the supervision of a member of staff.
The optional work placement year offers you the opportunity to work in multinational pharmaceutical companies or world famous research laboratories. Recent placements have included research work with Astra Zeneca, Pfizer,GlaxoSmithKline and Syngenta. Several Huddersfield biology students have contributed to The Human Genome Project at The Sanger Centre in Cambridge.

We use a wide variety of teaching methods and you will have the opportunity to follow your own interests. Similarly you will demonstrate your strengths through a range of assessments. As well as being an enjoyable experience, the final year research project contributes to your degree classification.
The recent advances in biology have led to a growing demand for graduates with expertise in cell culture and the techniques for gene manipulation. There are growing opportunities for molecular biologists in medicine, agriculture and the food and drug industries. The majority of graduates with good honours degrees go on to take higher degrees.
It is possible to progress to taught Master's courses (MSc) and to research degrees (PhD).
Lectures delivered by friendly approachable staff. A personal tutor will help with all aspects of university life. We help you prepare for work placement with interview practice and a professional CV.
A series of modules helps you develop personal skills, such as communication and IT skills, that employers value. Practical classes will give you personal experience of the same sophisticated equipment you will encounter in industrial, hospital and research laboratories.
A recent report from the Quality Assurance Agency rated the teaching of biology at Huddersfield as "excellent" (22 out of 24) and referred to "the high-quality teaching and learning delivered by enthusiastic and well-qualified staff".
