Specific requirements for this course are normally as follows:
We assess all applications individually.
Biochemistry is a fast developing science which seeks to understand the chemistry of life processes, such as enzyme action, viral replication, photosynthesis and brain function. It involves the study of the structure of the components of living matter such as proteins and nucleic acids. The subject overlaps with other areas of biology such as molecular biology and genetics. In addition, biochemistry contributes to the design of new drugs and helps us to understand the nature of diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. It also has a substantial input to the food, agricultural and biotechnological industries.
This course aims to develop your knowledge of chemistry, biology and biochemistry, as preparation for the more advanced topics of macromolecular structure, enzyme action, metabolism and gene cloning. It explores the techniques and concepts behind these areas along with their impact on society. You will develop your technical and scientific competence, along with your deductive, analytical and communication skills as a preparation for a wide range of careers. The final year includes a major research project and addresses a number of important topics in modern biology including cancer, immunology and recombinant DNA technology.
