Introduction

The chemical and pharmaceutical industry is the largest and most profitable manufacturing industry in the UK. Many of our most important wealth creating industries rely on a knowledge of the principles and applications of chemistry.

Today's qualified chemist must acquire a capacity for logical reasoning, an imaginative approach to solving problems and a flexibility that allows adaptation to a changing world.
Our Chemistry courses aim to develop these qualities. Broadly based on chemistry, they offer wider career opportunities through the choice of one of the specialised degrees listed above. First year modules provide a foundation across the field of chemistry and a sound base for more advanced study in the later stages of the course. In the second year you will also be able to study an option in analytical chemistry, modern biology, business, medicinal chemistry, forensic science or chemical engineering in addition to more advanced aspects of chemistry. There is an optional work experience placement in the third year. The final year includes a research project, more advanced topics in modern chemistry and further modules in your chosen option.

Course Structure

The Chemistry course provides a modern four-way split between inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry.

Year 1

  • Chemistry of the Elements
  • Introduction to Organic Molecules and their Reactions
  • General Introduction to Physical Chemistry
  • Introduction to Analytical Science and Spectroscopy
  • Techniques of Practical Chemistry
  • Data Handling and Computing

Year 2

Core modules:

  • Synthesis and Stereochemistry of Organic Molecules
  • Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Instrumental Analysis
  • Co-ordination Chemistry and Chemistry of Solids

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught using a combination of lectures, tutorials and workshops alongside practical laboratory classes. Modules are assessed using a variety of methods including written exams, essays, multiple choice questions, problem solving exercises, oral presentations and assessment of laboratory skills.

Career Opportunities

In the last 20 years the chemical industry has made the largest contribution to the balance of payments of all British manufacturing industries. There will always be a need for well qualified chemists. Graduates can apply for posts in research and development, management, production and process control, marketing, technical writing and teaching. Large companies involved with pharmaceuticals, oil, plastics, fertilisers, metals, textiles, glass, paint, cosmetics, printing, food and drink all employ chemists. There are also opportunities in the gas, coal, electricity, steel, water, health, forensic science and atomic energy sectors.

Placement

Placements are available in a wide variety of chemistry-related organisations such as pharmaceutical companies, chemical producers, food manufacturers, hospital laboratories, research organisations and water companies. The host company will pay you at an industrial rate and you will be visited regularly by a tutor.

Further Studies

It is possible to progress to taught Master's courses (MSc) and to research degrees (PhD).
