Entry requirements for the courses are normally one of the following:

Entry to BEng(Hons):

  • GCE A2 and AS levels or International Baccalaureate: 220 points including Mathematics and at least one other Science/Technology subject.
  • AVCE in Engineering, Science or Manufacturing including relevant optional units with 220 points.
  • BTEC National Diploma MMP.
  • Entry is also possible from the School's Engineering Foundation Year.
  • Progression to MEng is possible following good performance on the first two years of the appropriate MEng/BEng course.

Direct entry to MEng:

  • GCE A2 and AS levels or International Baccalaureate: 280 points including Mathematics at A2 level and at least one other Science/Technology subject.
  • AVCE in Engineering, Science or Manufacturing including relevant optional units with 280 points.
  • BTEC National Diploma DMM.

Introduction

This course was developed in response to industrial demand for a degree programme comprising a significant amount of automotive-related problem solving activity and project work. You will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art automotive test equipment including a full vehicle four-post suspension test rig, a two-wheel engine and transmission test rig and a range of engine test beds.

We also cover the business, financial and management aspects of automotive engineering.The University has a wealth of expertise in automotive engineering built through research and consultancy.We enjoy close relationships with companies such as Nissan, Toyota, BMW, Jaguar, Seddon Atkinson Vehicles, Cummins Turbochargers Technologies, Automotive Products, Eaton Transmissions and BBA Friction.

The MEng course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and will therefore allow you to apply for Chartered Engineer status early in your professional career.

MEng students follow one of the School's BEng(Hons) courses in Years 1 and 2 and undertake supervised work experience in Year 3.
Year 4 follows the same structure as the associated BEng(Hons) course, and in addition you will compile a personal development portfolio in preparation for Year 5.

Year 5 (MEng additional year)

  • Advanced Engineering Analysis and Engineering Research and Development
  • Modules in business management and a major group project, which integrates technical, business and personal skills

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching is by lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory and project work. Assessment is by assignments, examinations, in-class tests and presentations.

Recent sustained growth in the automotive industry has resulted in strong employment prospects for graduates with specialist knowledge and expertise who are able to make an immediate contribution to technical and managerial developments. An increasing number of graduates from all disciplines within the School find employment in the automotive industry. Companies who typically employ our graduates include Toyota, Bentley, Nissan, General Motors, Honda, BMW and Jaguar

Placement

A 12 month work placement provides the opportunity for you to apply the knowledge and skills learned on your course to a real work environment.

Special Features

The MEng course is accredited by the IMechE and allows you to apply for Chartered Engineer status early in your career.
