  • The equivalent of one A2 level GCSE in addition to three GCSEs at grade C or above (including Mathematics and English).
  • Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
  • Selection is by interview and usually a review of a portfolio of work.

Introduction

The course is the first part of a four year route to attaining an honours degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Interior Design and related subjects, to which successful completion of the Foundation year provides automatic progression.

The Foundation year is specifically intended for:

  • Students who are returning to study or who have no previous experience of degree-level study in the subject area.
  • Those who lack the practical skills (drawing, model-making etc) or confidence to begin a design-oriented degree programme.
  • Those who do not have the necessary grades to begin the normal first year of an honours degree.

The Foundation year provides a general introduction to the history and philosophy of architecture and interior design, the process and practice of architectural and interior design and the construction and servicing of buildings. It will also help prepare you for continuing your studies on the first year of a subsequent degree course.

Course Structure

The course comprises a series of practical design projects, supported by lectures, seminars and tutorials covering the following areas:

  • The basic history and theory of art, architecture, interior and urban design.
  • The basic process of architectural and interior design.
  • The elementary construction and servicing of buildings.
  • The communication of ideas and information in a variety of media (sketching, painting, technical drawing, computer-aided design, writing and verbal communication).

These are developed through the following modules:

  • Form and Structure 1
  • Materials Workshop 1
  • Foundation Studies in Architecture and Interior Design
  • Form and Structure 2
  • Materials Workshop 2
  • Graphic Communication Skills

Teaching and Assessment

The course comprises both practical and written assignments that are provisionally assessed on completion. Final assessment of all assignments takes place in a portfolio and verbal examination at the end of the session. There are currently no formal written examinations in the programme.

Career Opportunities

Successful students may progress to a BA or BSc honours degree course leading to careers in architecture, architectural technology, interior design and related disciplines.
