Introduction

The environment has become a global political issue, with climate change affecting our water supplies, health, ecosystems and economies. But the environment is not only of social and economic importance; it provides employment in safeguarding our environmental assets and securing a sustainable future.

Businesses are recognising that their organisations must become sustainable in the true sense of the word if they are to survive in the long term. Complex economic, social and environmental pressures are encouraging companies to adopt sustainable practices. Consumers, employees and other stakeholders are now more demanding, the investment community is increasingly aware of sustainability criteria as a measure of performance, and the impact business has on society is a growing focus for regulators and law makers. Based on the core Business Studies modules, this degree offers you the opportunity to specialise in areas relating to business and its impact on the environment.

Year 3may be spent in a business placement in any company where you may take the opportunity to discover what aspects of environmental management are applied in the organisation.

Teaching and Assessment

On year one teaching is delivered through a two hour seminar system with class sizes of no more than 25 students. This provides the opportunity for close support from tutors and allows maximum interaction between tutor and student during the learning process. In year two and the final year we use a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials.

Assessment varies from subject to subject but includes essays, projects, group work, in-class tests and formal examinations. Our varied assessment methods are focused upon the development of transferable skills which will provide immediate benefit in your future career.

Placement

The work placement year provides you with an opportunity to improve your future prospects and develop practical skills and experience in the workplace. Opting for a placement year can vastly improve your chances of a better degree classification.

Business School students who completed a placement year were three times more likely to achieve a 2:1 or 1st degree award than those students who didn't (TQEF Survey 2006).

Our Business Placement Unit is dedicated to sourcing relevant placement opportunities for students and works with a wide range of local and national companies. Overseas placements in Europe and further afield may also be available.

Further Studies

This course is ideal preparation for our taught Master's courses, especially the MSc Risk Management.

Special Features

Our students take part in a management development residential programme in the second year held in the Lake District which focuses on skills development, leadership, project management and team-working.

Other Information

The Centre for Enterprise, Ethics and the Environment (CEEE) is located in the Business School and researches into areas of sustainable business and the relationship between business and the environment.
