Introduction

Business Information Management is one of the business programme suite of degrees based on the core Business Studies modules. It allows you to develop an understanding of how information is used in business and introduces you to the methods available.

These include technological solutions such as database management and website design as well as the management of paper-based systems.

In addition to the core business subjects, you study one specialist subject module each year. Year 3gives you the opportunity to work in a company to gain increased understanding of how systems work in practice.

Teaching and Assessment

On year one teaching is delivered through a two hour seminar system with class sizes of no more than 25 students. This provides the opportunity of close support from tutors and allows maximum interaction between tutor and student during the learning process. In year two and the final year we use a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials.

Assessment varies from subject to subject but includes essays, projects, group work, in-class tests and formal examinations. Our varied assessment methods are focused upon the development of transferable skills which will provide immediate benefit in your future career.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates have an excellent track record in obtaining employment with either their placement company or other organisations. This degree provides graduates with the knowledge, understanding and transferable skills which are essential in both well established business organisations and also Internet start-ups.

Placement

Choosing a work placement offers you the opportunity to develop skills and experience that will be of value to potential employers, giving you a head start in your graduate career and the potential to achieve a higher starting salary.

Opting for a placement year can improve your graduate earning potential and vastly improve your chances of a better degree classification. Business School students who completed a placement year were three times more likely to achieve a 2:1 or 1st degree award than those students who didn't (TQEF Survey 2006).

Our Business Placement Unit is dedicated to sourcing relevant placement opportunities for students and works with a wide range of local, national and international companies.

Further Studies

This course is an ideal preparation for our taught Master's courses, especially the MSc in Electronic Business.

Special Features

Our students take part in a management development residential programme in the second year held in the Lake District which focuses on skills development, leadership, project management and team-working.

Other Information

The Department has a developing relationship with the UK Council for Electronic Business. This provides both academic and work based learning opportunities.
