In addition strong emphasis will be placed on the quality of your portfolio and a satisfactory interview. Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.
Strong sketching and visual skills are required as well as dedicated design work relating to Transport Design; either completed as part of course work or outside this time.
You will be expected to demonstrate a good level of 3D sketching ability and a considered and thoughtful approach to design and transport issues through your portfolio and interview.

Design projects form the core of your studies, allowing you to apply skills and knowledge acquired from associated modules. Live projects have involved Jaguar, Nissan, Ford, Land Rover, TVR and MG Rover. While a proportion of the course is orientated towards automotive design, projects also allow for a wider interpretation of Transport Design including public transport, trucks, motorcycles, boats and bikes as well as more conceptual approaches towards future transport issues. You will gain a range of skills including sketch drawing, model-making (including clay modelling) and computer aided design skills together with technical and contextual inputs.

Delivery is a combination of studio-based activities and tutorials together with lectures. Progress is monitored by continuous assessment of design projects and assignments throughout the course, with progression indicators at the end of each academic year.
The range of skills acquired will enable you to work in a wide range of positions in the industry, including automotive exteriors and interiors, boat design, public transport design, aircraft interiors, accessory design, or as a CAD modeller or model-maker.
An optional supervised 48-week placement forms the sandwich part of the course in Year 3. The course team will assist you to find a suitable placement in a design or related environment. A salary is normally paid. Placements have included Ford, Design Q, Morgan, TVR, Princess Yachts, Mitsubishi and Scania.
Elements of the first year of the course are delivered at Huddersfield Technical College Highfields campus.
