Entry Requirements

Additional requirements for this course are normally one of the following:

  • 240-320 points gained in A levels including two 6- unit (A2) awards.
  • A minimum of 200 points gained in Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) double awards plus an additional 40-120 points gained at A2 or equivalent qualification.
  • An EdExcel/BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject, with a minimum of three merits.
  • Successful completion of a Foundation course in Art and Design with at least 100 points at AS/A2 level in relevant subjects.

In addition to the above, strong emphasis will be placed on your verbal communication skill during the interview.

Other suitable experience or qualifications will be considered.

Introduction

Fashion and Textile Buying is one of a group of three inter-related courses which provide a unique blend of design sensitivity and business acumen leading to exciting and diverse career opportunities. By focusing on the business and management aspects of fashion and textiles, the courses recognise the new opportunities within this innovative and progressive industry. The courses have a common core in the first two years to provide you with the fundamental skills and knowledge of retailing, buying and management related to fashion and textiles. During the final year you can choose to specialise in buying, management or retailing.

This course will:

  • Explain the links between design, manufacture and retailing of fashion and textiles.
  • Give you the skills to succeed in a career in fashion and textile buying.
  • Provide you with an understanding of the importance of international sourcing of fashion and textile products.

Teaching and Assessment

We use a range of assessment methods to relate the course material to current commercial practice: individual and group assignments, essays and seminar presentations.

Career Opportunities

The fashion and textile industry offers varied and interesting careers and you will be given career advice in the second year of the course. Graduates are employed in positions such as buying, merchandising, range selecting and product development. Recent graduate employment destinations include head office positions within Next, Arcadia, Tesco and Mavi Jeans.

Placement

You may choose to spend the third year of your course on a salaried work placement either in the UK or overseas, or on an exchange with one of our approved partner universities overseas.

Special Features

The Department has excellent, modern workshops in which the process of fashion and textile production can be demonstrated, including a very well equipped CAD area.
