Additional requirements are as follows:

  • Cache Diploma B B/C practical
  • You must be able to communicate in standard spoken and written English.
  • Medical and criminal clearance records checks. We arrange these during the application process.

You should also have one of the following totaling a minimum of 240 UCAS points:

  • A minimum of 2 Advanced GCE awards or equivalent.
  • BTEC National Diploma (with at least three Level III merits).
  • AVCE double award.
  • A vocational A level.
  • Completion of a Foundation Course in early childhood or a related educational area.

Introduction

This course is designed for you if you have an interest in working with children and young people, but have not yet decided which professional avenue you wish to choose. It provides an educational programme which will prepare you for a range of occupations and/or further professional training courses in education, early years work, youth work, learning support and other occupations related to children and young people. The course offers the opportunity to study core aspects of childhood and areas of underpinning knowledge essential for those planning to work with children and young people, such as safeguarding children and young people, working with families and ensuring children's health and well-being. A range of optional modules drawn from relevant parts of the School's undergraduate programme will also be available.

Career Opportunities

You will be able to apply for a range of postgraduate professional training courses in other institutions or in the School, which offers postgraduate teacher training in early primary and post-compulsory education, as well as a postgraduate Certificate in Early Childhood Studies (with Early Years Professional Status) and a postgraduate Diploma in Professional Studies (Youth and Community Work). You be able to apply for employment with a range of Local Authority and voluntary organisations in the field of young people's services, though many of these may expect a professional qualification for some posts.

Placement

In your third year you will have the opportunity to undertake a placement in a setting relevant to one of the main occupational areas concerned with children and young people. The work associated with this placement will give you the opportunity to develop and reflect on a range of work-related skills.
