This course is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to apply knowledge and understanding of accounting to a career in business, management or finance, without necessarily wishing to pursue a professional qualification. It is particularly focused on developing your knowledge and skills for private sector small businesses.
The course enables you to tailor your final award to reflect your own aspirations and strengths when competing in the work environment.
A number of graduates have chosen to pursue further study through the Department’s postgraduate courses, MSc Accounting (International) and MSc Accounting (Financial Services).
Year 1
This is a common first year across all Accountancy courses in the Department of Accountancy and comprises:
At this point you may choose to take the specialist course in Small Businesses or to transfer to the specialist courses in Law, Information Systems or the professionally accredited BA(Hons) Accountancy and Finance. Alternatively you may choose to study under the Erasmus scheme at an English speaking International Business School in the Netherlands (there are no tuition fees to pay and grants are available).
Year 2
Year 3 Full-time/Year 4 Sandwich
Option modules:
Teaching and learning methods can include one-hour lectures, workshops, tutorials and seminars and may use case studies, computer-based learning or other approaches. You will have opportunities to develop personal and team working skills. Undertaking a business placement year (see below) is a vital part of that development and will significantly improve your employment prospects.
The course offers the possibility of a wide variety of career opportunities in accountancy, business and management as you will understand how organisations operate and how they are financed, whether you wish to pursue a career in the private, public or voluntary sectors.
You can choose to take a paid business placement at the end of two years of study. These placements provide an opportunity to see accountancy and finance in action. They help you develop the knowledge and skills obtained on the course and see the pervasive influence of accountants in organisations.
