Introduction

In modern life, computer systems are everywhere: from home entertainment systems and mobile phones through to communication networks, automotive and avionic control systems and industrial process control. Computer systems range from those based on programmable logic controllers or microcontrollers through to intelligent systems. Self-contained computer chips, such as microcontrollers, are most common in embedded systems where they are hidden in electronic products. The sustained growth in this field of engineering is reflected in an ever increasing demand for computer systems engineers across a wide range of industrial and commercial organisations.

The multi-disciplinary role of a computer systems engineer requires in-depth knowledge and skills in software programming techniques, computer systems architectures and electronics. You will develop hardware and software skills and the knowledge necessary to design and implement computer systems. The integrative approach we take to the core aspects of computer science and electronic engineering will help in this development.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching, learning and assessment of knowledge, understanding and design principles are developed through lectures, worked example sessions and tutorials. Practical, design, implementation and test skills are developed through laboratories and workshops involving problem-solving and design assignments, practical exercises and mini-projects. You will be trained and encouraged to become an active and independent learner. Teaching, learning and assessment is also supported by 'Blackboard', our web-based virtual learning environment.

We have received the maximum possible quality rating in curriculum, teaching, resources, student support and quality procedures in our most recent assessment by the Quality Assurance Agency.

Career Opportunities

Computer Systems Engineering graduates are in high demand, both nationally and internationally. You may take up a variety of careers in industry or commerce: system designer, technical manager, hardware or software design specialist, technical sales etc. in technological areas such as home entertainment, communications, aerospace, automotive and medical systems.

Placement

The optional 12-month work placement provides the opportunity for you to gain invaluable employment experience. Our dedicated Placement Unit is in direct contact with over 60 companies (UK and overseas) and will assist you to find a suitable placement and help with tasks such as CV preparation and interview skills.

Special Features

On this course you will develop hardware and software skills and acquire the knowledge necessary to design and implement computer systems.
