Undergraduate prospectus 2009/10

Applying to come here

If you are applying for a first degree, foundation degree, DipHE or HND course, you should submit your application through UCAS – the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Apply online at www.ucas.com

If you are a student at a school or college registered with UCAS then advice is available from your teacher or a careers adviser at your school or college. You will need to obtain a ‘buzzword’ from your tutor or careers adviser, which you will need when you register with UCAS. This establishes the organisation you are applying from and allows your referee to attach your reference. You fill in an online application and submit it to a member of staff.

After checking your details, and adding the academic reference, your school or college submits the completed application to UCAS. You pay online using a credit card or debit card – or you may be able to pay through your school or college.

If you are a UK-based applicant who is not currently at school or college, you can apply online independently. You are responsible for paying the correct fee, for obtaining and attaching the academic reference and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS.

If you are an international applicant outside the UK (both within the EU and world-wide), you apply online independently (unless your school or college is registered with UCAS).  Advice is available from British Council offices and other centres overseas. You are responsible for paying the correct application fee, for obtaining and attaching the academic reference and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS.

For all applicants there are full instructions at www.ucas.com/students/apply/ to make it as easy as possible for you to fill in your online application, plus help text where appropriate. UCAS also has a comprehensive guide called ‘Applying Online’, which can be downloaded from www.ucas.com

If you require further information you can contact the UCAS Customer Service Unit on +44 (0)871 468 0468 (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm UK time).

When to apply through UCAS

If you’re planning to start your course in Autumn 2009, UCAS will accept your application from 1 September 2008.

We welcome applications from students who wish to defer entry to their chosen course for one year. Please ensure this is indicated on your application form.

If you’re applying from an EU country, you should make sure your application form is received by UCAS by 15 January 2009. If you’re applying from outside the EU, you should apply as early as possible. Places on popular courses cannot be guaranteed for applications received after 15 January 2009. You should allow plenty of time to make immigration, travel and accommodation arrangements.

Art and design courses have slightly different arrangements. Route A courses are processed in the normal way with deadlines as described above. Route B courses have an application deadline of 24 March 2009, after which you will be invited to a series of interviews.

The UCAS website will tell you which courses are Route A and Route B. Some courses allow you to apply using either route; if you are applying from outside the EU we recommend you use Route A.

Please note: At the time this prospectus was compiled it was unconfirmed whether these arrangements would remain the same for 2009 entry. Please check the UCAS website

for up to date information.

Course codes

The UCAS website will give you code names and numbers for all courses – make sure you enter the right code on your application form.

The institution code for Huddersfield is
HUDDS H60.

For University Centre Barnsley courses please
insert X in the campus code box.

For University Centre Oldham courses please
insert Z in the campus code box.

For all other courses please leave this box blank.

Clearing

UCAS runs a special service in August and September to match any remaining vacancies with students who don’t have places yet – if, for instance, they haven’t achieved their expected grades at A level. Any application received after 30 June automatically goes into the Clearing process. Applications for Route B art and design courses received after 12 June also go into the Clearing process.

UCAS Extra

UCAS Extra is a process that makes it possible for you to apply to additional universities or colleges that still have vacancies. Extra operates from the end of February until the end of June. It means that you do not have to wait until Clearing to apply for other courses. In Extra, you apply for one course at a time using the Track service on the UCAS website

www.ucas.com/students/afteryouapply/extra

To use Extra you need to have:

  • already made five choices;
  •  received decisions from all these choices; and
  •  either had no offers or declined all the offers you have received.
