The School of Education and Professional Development offers a supportive and stimulating environment for postgraduate research students from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds. The School has provided opportunities for study at PhD, EdD and Masters level for more than twenty years, and many of the graduates from our postgraduate research programmes now occupy senior positions in the education systems of the UK and countries overseas.
Ongoing research underpins the School’s reputation for developing professionals. This is complemented by a substantial body of research students at masters and doctoral level and a vibrant and dynamic research culture with activities that include a seminar series, lectures by external speakers, funded research projects, book publications and journal articles. There are two Research Centres in the School and active research clusters that reflect emergent research areas led by our senior academics.
In the last Research Assessment Exercise, a substantial proportion of our School’s research activity was deemed to be of international importance in terms of its originality, significance and rigour, with much of it representing quality that is both excellent and world leading.
We offer a one year Masters in research and have a substantial and successful record of supervising PhDs as well as an established Doctor of Education (EdD) programme. The latter is a research degree, equivalent to a PhD, aimed at experienced professionals and includes a first year of formally assessed work to provide a grounding in research techniques.
As a postgraduate research student you would have regular contact with academics, a nominated supervisor and a supervisory team with expertise to oversee your area of study. There will be a programme of support including research methodology, access to a nominated researchers’ room in the School and an academic skills tutor. We will consider applications to study at a distance if you wish to remain in your own country for part-time or full-time study.
