Case-based Learning in Politics is an FDTL 5 project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council, based at the University of Huddersfield and running for two years from April 2005.

Phase one of the project was to produce a Review of Good Practice in Case Based Learning, bringing together best practice from other fields and disciplines where the approach is used, and seeing how this can be adapted and applied to Politics teaching. The Review of Good Practice is available to download. We have also undertaken an inventory of the core skills which are lacking in graduate recruits to local government - skills which Case Based Learning does much to develop. Download the Core Skills Inventory.

Phase two was to produce a range of case based learning packages. These are all based on real life events, situations and issues, drawn from interviews with people working in local government and the voluntary sector, and designed to cover a range of topics from political theory to work based learning in local government. Each is a complete teaching package, complete with background material, suggested reading and tutor notes. There are currently eight cases available.

Finally, and most innovatively, we are producing a web based interactive template which will enable you to produce your own cases, tailor made for your particular teaching and learning requirements, and using your own material.
