Psychology and Counselling

Welcome to the Division of Psychology and Counselling.

The study of the mind is an area of exciting knowledge and research concerning the way we interact with the world and each other. The word Psychology comes from the Ancient Greek words for the “science of the soul”. Counselling is defined as the exploration of difficulty, distress or loss of purpose. The courses we teach, and the research and practice that we carry out, reflect our varied and interesting approaches to these subjects. This webpage provides links to the courses we offer, and to the leading edge research that the staff of the Division carry out.

Courses include: B.Sc (hons) Psychology, B.Sc (hons) Psychology and Criminology, B.Sc (hons) Psychology and Counselling.
All of the above courses are accredited by the British Psychological Society as leading to the Graduate Basis for Registration, the first step to becoming a Chartered Psychologist.
B.Sc (hons) Counselling, B.Sc (hons) Psychological Studies (taught at the University centres), M.Sc Investigative Psychology (awaiting validation)

Many of our staff in Counselling are practicing counsellors, but also carry out research and scholarly activity that establishes them as highly respected colleagues within the discipline

All of the staff in Psychology are active researchers, and projects currently underway range from the psychology of aesthetics to the examination of the psychology of violent sex offenders; from the psychology of pregnancy and childhood to the neuropsychology of adjustment.
