Human and Health Sciences

General Information

The School was formed in 1989 as part of the reorganisation of the institution designed to establish a series of units which could control their own academic and financial affairs. In April 1996 the West Yorkshire College of Health was incorporated into the School, more than doubling the numbers of academic staff and students.

It currently employs over 170 academic staff, supported by a School Services Manager, Administrative Assistants, secretaries and technical staff.

The School supports over 4,500 students on academic and vocational courses, studying a wide range of social science and professional courses, and is the largest in the University. There is a high proportion of mature students.

As might be expected in a School with so many practice-based courses, links with external organisations are particularly strong.

There is an active research community in the School focussed around several centres and research groups. In the last RAE, Social Work gained a grade 5, the highest of any 'new' University.

The School of Human and Health Sciences has been fortunate in attracting external funding of close to £500,000 per year to support its activities. This supports several research fellows and a large number of research assistants and research students.

Policies and Guidelines for Teaching Staff

Most of the policies for Learning and Teaching in the University can be found in the Registry's Handbooks of Regulations. Where we need to produce School-level policies and procedures, these are discussed and agreed through the School committee system.

School Staff Development

From the 1 March 2007 these revised forms (PDF) should be used to obtain approval for any staff development activity to be paid for by the School.

The procedure and some guidance notes on how to complete the forms have also been published.

This documentation is only available on campus. If you have any queries or require any further information please contact Wayne Keating on ext.3247.

The School is organised into three Departments:

...and a number of Committees.
