Organ Scholarship

“An Organ Scholarship is available at Leeds Cathedral and is suitable for students intending to follow a professional career in classical music. The Organ Scholar works alongside the Director of Music to provide organ accompaniments and to assist in choral training if required. The scholarship is currently worth £2250 per annum. It is tenable for 12 months, ideally from September, to include an initial month’s probationary period and renewable annually subject to mutual agreement.

The Cathedral benefits from a newly built Klais organ, generally regarded as one of the finest cathedral organs in the UK.  The original organ was manufactured by one of the most eminent English organ builders, Norman and Beard, and was built specifically for the Cathedral in 1904. Following a period of silence of around 30 years, Johannes Klais Orgelbau were chosen to reconstruct and enlarge the instrument to serve the requirements of the restored cathedral and new position of the choir.  The organ was built in the workshops of Klais in Bonn, and transported to the Cathedral in July 2009 to complete the work in situ over a six month period. The project was under the supervision of Benjamin Saunders and David Sanger. The tonal style is English Edwardian, and so all the historic 1904 pipework has been carefully restored on its original chests, with new pipework matching the original materials and construction methods. The organ now has seven divisions, controlled from a four manual console with 78 stops, and features a unique new system of allocating manual departments to keyboards.

Scholarships for International Students

The Patrick Stewart Scholarships are available to cover part or all of the tuition fees for full-time international students' studies at Huddersfield, and are awarded on a competitive basis. Full-time applicants for undergraduate or postgraduate courses are eligible to apply for the awards. The scholarships have been designed to make a University of Huddersfield education more affordable to international students. Priority is given to applicants of high academic ability who would have otherwise not have been able to afford to study at the University. Application forms are available online, and the deadline is the middle of July each year. Applicants must have already applied to Huddersfield for their course, and be holding an offer of a place.

Bursaries in Music (2011 entry)

Two students PracticingThe department will offer a limited number of bursaries of up to £500 per annum to students who play ‘endangered’ instruments to an exceptional standard at audition. Typically, the instruments to which bursaries might be awarded would include: viola, cello, double bass, oboe, bassoon, French horn, tenor voice, bass voice, harp.

Guidelines for applicants

Applicants auditioning for the performance modules at the University will automatically be considered for a bursary.

Applications to the BMus (Hons) or BA (Hons) Music with a Modern Language / English / Drama / History / and Journalism must be received by UCAS (www.ucas.com) before the mid- January deadline (15 January 2011); ‘late’ UCAS applicants will not be eligible for these bursaries, nor applicants using UCAS ‘extra’ or clearing.

Applicants will only be eligible for the award if they place Huddersfield as their ‘firm’ choice, within the standard deadline of the UCAS cycle .

Bursaries are highly competitive, and based entirely on the standard of performance as assessed by a member of staff of the University of Huddersfield during the audition. Appeals are not possible.

Decisions will usually be conveyed to successful applicants within one fortnight of the audition taking place. Applicants who do not receive notification within this time have not been successful.

Continuation of the bursary into the second and third year of study would be based on suitable progress in performance, including a high mark in the end-of-year performance recital and continued participation in relevant university ensembles (e.g. Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Chamber Choir, as appropriate).
