Brass Band studies at Huddersfield

The BMus Music is the ideal course to pursue Brass Band Studies. As a brass band musician, you would have an unrivalled quantity of individual tuition by a range of specialists, including members of internationally acclaimed brass bands (Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, YBS, Brighouse and Rastrick), composers and arrangers for brass.

Major route performers receive one hour per week individual tuition:

Specialise in brass studies in Years 2 and 3

Majoring in performance, you could take up to two thirds of your credit in brass-related subjects in years two and three.

Year 2:
Solo Performance 40 credits
Directed Ensembles (Brass Band) 20 credits
Scoring and arranging for brass 20 credits
Musicology 2 40 credits
Year 3:
Solo Performance 40 credits
Studies in Performance 20 credits
Chamber music OR Brass Band 20 credits
Brass Band research project 20 credits
Musicology 3 20 credits

University of Huddersfield Brass Band (cond. Phillip McCann)

  • Weekly rehearsals (2 – 3 hours per week)
  • Concerts in the university series, as well as popular recitals Leeds, Huddersfield and Dewsbury town halls
  • Variety of challenging repertoire, from arrangements to innovative contemporary music
  • Workshop opportunities for your own arrangements and compositions for brass

Access to the region’s thriving brass band community

Many students are members both of the University of Huddersfield band and an additional band in the area, such as Sellers International, Yorkshire Building Society, Hepworth, Pennine Brass, Slaithwaite and Skelmanthorpe.
