Paul Lunn and the virtual sci-pop festival

Music Technology tutor Paul Lunn

Music Technology lecturer Paul Lunn appeared at the unique Geek Pop 09 earlier this month (6 - 15 March) coinciding with National Science & Engineering Week.  The aim of the event was to promote science through music, encouraging people to take an interest in all aspects of the scientific world.

Now in its second year, the virtual ‘sci-pop’ festival saw tens of thousands of online festival-goers flock to its site when it was first launched in 2008 on the Null Hypothesis science blog.  Paul hopes his contribution to the festival will help to instil a passion for science into others:

“The organisers of Geek Pop approached me after hearing some of my music online and asked me to take part,” he explains. “I have a song called ‘Geek’, which made the BBC Raw Talent top 20 songs of 2008, which I was sure they would use, but in the end they chose a song called ‘Octopus, I love you’ which was self produced.  There was also a video and an interview with me in the ‘Green Room’.

“I’m very interested in science and a lot of my music is science-based.  My band, Dalmatian Rex and the Eigentones, have received some airplay on Radio 1 and Radio 6 Music before, and it’s great to continue being involved with events that promote new music to a wider audience.”

Geek Pop 09 is a unique way to experience great new music from across the globe for free and in an environmentally-friendly and exciting way.  With platforms such as ‘The Reproductive Stage’ and ‘The Tetrahedron’, as well as many others, there is something for everyone.
