The University of Huddersfield is preparing to host one of the biggest events in the Computer Games calendar.
The X48 Expands GameCamp Programs for Emerging Game Design and Development talent in the UK is a two-day marathon for Computer Games students to prove their worth and produce a game in just 48 hours.
After releasing the tickets for X48:Microsoft XNA GameCamp Birmingham and them selling out so quickly, tickets for X48 Huddersfield were prematurely released and sold out within three days.
The University of Huddersfield currently hold the X48 title after their teams scooped 1st and 2nd prize last year. Using Microsoft’s XNA Game Studio 3.1, X48 will offer the student teams an unprecedented opportunity to be mentored by and have their work reviewed by computer giant Microsoft and regional screen agency Screen Yorkshire – key sponsors of the two-day game camp.
The events are produced by Pixel-Lab, creators of the successful Playful conference and organisers of industry prototype programme Get in the Game.

The event will be themed to challenge the students to develop games that look beyond the traditional puzzle or first person shooter genres in a bid to create new conversations around gaming and attract the attention of new audiences. And, to ensure the teams do not prepare in advance, they will not be given the theme for their game prototypes until the opening session on each Friday morning.
“Having Microsoft and the X48 event at the University of Huddersfield will be a fantastic opportunity for students in Yorkshire & Humber to express their game-making talents," says Jamie Sefton, Sector Manager of Game Republic, part of Screen Yorkshire.
"I can't wait to see what exciting, fun and imaginative games come out of the two-day workshop."
Damian De Luca, Subject Leader at the University of Huddersfield.
“We’re delighted to be hosting X48 at Huddersfield and continuing to develop our working relationship with Microsoft and the games industry. Our students have a great track record of making winning games; from X48 last year to Yo Ho Kablammo becoming a published title on Xbox Live Arcade! I’m sure it will be a tough competition with very high standards; it’s bound to be an exciting event!”
