One particular member of staff, who has spearheaded many of the library’s new technical initiatives, has now been recognised for his hard work and dedication to the cause.
Library Systems Manager, Dave Pattern, has been awarded the title of Information Professional of the Year in the annual Information World Review awards, held in London earlier this month.
A member of staff at the University since 2001 and a former Huddersfield student, Dave received nominations from both his University colleagues as well as peers from outside of the University.
“It came as a bit of a surprise when I got the phone call to say I had won” said Dave
“I am honoured to have won though; particularly as those who have won the award before me are people I hold in quite high esteem, it’s very flattering.”
The judges felt Dave demonstrated, not only his value within his institution, but had also had an influential impact across the wider library community.
An active supporter of one day events, known in library circles as the ‘Mashed Libraries’ series, Dave has organised two of the six, hosting them at the University of Huddersfield. The events aim to ‘bring together interested people and doing interesting stuff with libraries and technology,’ and places sell out within a day.
Within the University Library itself Dave’s hard work has resulted in many radical changes.
“I wanted to try making the library catalogue system a bit more ‘amazon-y’, move it away from being like a stock inventory and became more of a useful tool for students.” Dave said.
“There are quite a few things our University were the first to do. For example, when students looked at books on the system, we added recommendations like ‘students who borrow this item also borrowed these;’ recommendations based on analysis of historical borrowing trends. “
A valuable asset at the University of Huddersfield, the award of Information Professional of the Year is well deserved and also highlights Dave’s value in the wider library community.
