The University of Huddersfield welcomed Super League and England Rugby League stars as they took part in a series of media training sessions in the University’s TV Studio.

Headed by Robin Bailey, the Director of Capricorn Media, BBC sports commentator Dave Woods also lent a hand as players took part in training sessions which taught them how to communicate effectively with the public via the media.
“Particularly with television, first impressions are really important,” said Robin, whose company have provided media training for major sports stars like Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas and Nelson Piquet Jr.
“You can see someone on TV and instantly make up your mind on what they are like and what sort of a person they are, just perhaps on the basis of how they are standing or what they are saying,” he said.
“What we do is try and make that first impression as palatable and enjoyable for the viewer as possible, ensuring they gain a good impression of the sport, the personality, and/or their club.”

The sessions - carried out at the request of the Rugby Football League - saw some of the University’s media students filming the likes of Huddersfield’s Shaun Lunt and up-and-coming England Academy star Rhys Evans in different sports interview scenarios.
Watching the film back as they went along, Robin and Dave pinpointed and discussed aspects with the players which would help improve their technique as an interviewee.

Warrington and England star Richie Myler was among the players taking part in the training sessions at the University and he had this to say about his experiences.
“We have been learning the basics of how to conduct yourself when on camera, getting little tips on how to make yourself come across a lot better.
“Today has made me aware that when we do an interview we become the spokesperson for our sport, so it’s really important we give a good impression to viewers and listeners. When I watched my first interview back it was pointed out that I wasn’t smiling; you could see I was frowning a lot trying to concentrate on the conversation, obviously thinking and worrying a bit about what my responses would be.
“I’ve only been here a few hours and I have already learnt a lot. I’ve never done anything like this before and it is pretty cringe-worthy watching yourself in front of everyone, but we have definitely learnt some valuable media skills today.”
