Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE2008) RESULTS

Following the publication of the results of the government's national Research Assessment Exercise in universities across the country, the equivalent of 35 staff here at Huddersfield were identified as conducting research that is either 'internationally excellent' or 'world leading'.

The University of Huddersfield entered 12 subject areas, listed below, of which a third was accredited as 'Internationally Excellent' or 'World Leading' and three quarters was assessed as 'Internationally Recognised'.  Ten subjects - Chemistry, Computing, Education, Engineering, Accountancy, Social Work, Sociology, English, History and Music - had research that was recognised as being 'World Leading' or 'Internationally Excellent'.

The University is committed to increasing its research profile in all its subject and the Research Assessment Exercise results shows that commitment.

Four Star - Quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

Three Star - Quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour but nonetheless falls short of the highest standards of excellence.

Two Star - Quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

One Star - Quality that is recognised nationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

Unclassified (U) - Quality that falls below the standard of nationally recognised work or work which does meet the published definition of research for the purposes of this assessment.
