The University of Huddersfield is passionate about supporting the needs of local schools and sixth form colleges. The School of Applied Sciences is one of seven academic schools within the university and has a particularly active outreach programme. The school is divided into two departments - Chemical and Biological Sciences and Logistics and Hospitality Management. The information listed here refers to outreach by the Chemical and Biological Sciences department.
The activities run by the department include:
Most of our activities are focused at secondary KS4 and post 16, particularly year 10 and year 12. However, some activities are for KS3 and KS2 (year 6).
A one day event with 15 to 32 pupils including lab time will cost the university in the region of £800, this includes academic and technical staff time, room hire, food, chemical consumables etc. If possible we try to find funding for an event to run, but if not the University will meet the costs. We have started to charge a small fee for food/refreshments for some of the events, and a booking fee of £50 may also be charged.
With the exception of talks, which are given by academic staff, the other activities are usually presented by a mixture of staff and students (undergraduate and postgraduate). This mixture helps to break down barriers and creates a better learning environment.
The department of Chemical and Biological Sciences teaches degrees in the following subject areas.
Our events and activities reflect these 5 subject areas.
We are proud of our record at producing high quality events for young people. This reflects are commitment to teaching and learning for our own students. The University of Huddersfield is an excellent place to come and study for a degree.
