Skills and qualities required by the course
As well as academic qualifications, a range of skills and personal qualities will be an advantage in succeeding on the MPharm course
- Communication Skills Written and Verbal - you should enjoy writing and be prepared to learn how to write in different styles appropriate for different audiences and situations. Verbal skills are important too for talking persuasively to groups and individuals, although you do not need to be an extrovert to achieve this skill.
- IT skills - you should have the ability to adapt to the use of technology to develop professional communication and presentation skills. We look for a willingness to build and develop PC skills in order to use technology relevant to Pharmacy.
Study skills and Attributes
- Time Management - you should be independent and self-motivated with the ability to take charge of your own learning. This includes working to deadlines and working within an agreed timetable.
- Problem Solving - the ability to problem solve is essential for all aspects of the course. It would be useful if you started the course with some problem solving skills and these will be developed through assignments and study support.
- Numeracy skills - the ability to use numbers effectively and efficiently and to understand the mathematical inter-relationships between concepts and formulae is desirable for this course, although parts of this degree will develop your numerical abilities and skills.
- Open Minded Approach - in many areas of pharmacy there is no pre-determined right or wrong answer and you will be aware that there are many different ways of looking at the world and explaining the processes that go on within it. You should be prepared to challenge and question what you read.
- Self Management - one of the main skills you need to bring with you is the efficient management of your private study programme. You will need self-discipline to meet the different and often conflicting demands upon your time, organisation skills to prepare for seminars and an up to date diary for noting the submission dates of written assignments.
- Maturity - mature students are welcomed onto this programme. Your work experience will often have developed important skills, qualities and attributes.
- Enthusiasm and Commitment - studying for a degree is both intellectually challenging and time consuming so you need to be committed and conscientious as well as prepared to accept challenges, persevere with problems and willing to identify difficulties and seek advice when needed. We are looking for enthusiastic students who are excited by the exploration of ideas and who enjoy problem solving and discussion.
- Evidence of Achievement and Potential - your portfolio of work should be a comprehensive survey of achievements over the past period of study. We recommend you select the work to show what you consider to represent your interest and strengths.
- Independence - experience has proved that students who are independent and self-reliant do particularly well at university. We look for these qualities as expressed through participation in activities and community work.
- Flexibility - we are looking for a flexible approach to learning new skills and concepts. The ability to adapt to changes and accept new or different ideas is very important.
