"It's big enough for there to be a lot going on, small enough to be noticed."
Comment from a student
You will be part of a cohort where we will get to know you well and help you develop into a Pharmacist ready to take on the challenge of patient care, whether that be in a healthcare environment or the industry.
Our course at Huddersfield has been developed from the very basics with members from the local pharmaceutical community who have told us what they would like from our graduates. We have looked at the knowledge and skills that a pharmacist uses at the moment and the skills and knowledge we believe the pharmacist will require in the future. As a result a curriculum has been developed to equip you with the tools that you will take to the work place and provide you with a sound footing on which to build your career.
The department also has a long tradition of training professionals and the new course builds on our established expertise in pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry and biochemistry. In the last QAA review of teaching quality for chemistry it scored 22 out 24. The members of the academic staff have experience in a variety of pharmacy related disciplines and many are involved in 'cutting edge research' that informs their teaching.
The pharmacists teaching practice aspects of the course have worked in a variety of environments as well as still retaining a practice base and will draw on these experiences to illuminate many of the subjects covered.
As pharmacists in practice you will be expected to work as part of the healthcare team, where each profession brings their own expertise to provide an integrated approach to the treatment of patients. Because this is important we have built strong links with the School of Human & Health Sciences and have identified teaching sessions that will be delivered by nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, as well as sessions where you will have the opportunity to learn and interact with other students on health related courses.
In addition to applying the skills and knowledge you gain in the safety of the classroom environment, from the very first year of your studies we have planned visits to community and hospital pharmacies and local pharmaceutical manufacturers where you will see the practical application and context of the material taught and learn from the working environment. The chance to build relationships with prospective employers will also be invaluable when applying for vocational work and ultimately your pre-registration post.
Socially, all students will be encouraged to join the British Pharmaceutical Students Association (BPSA) and the Huddersfield university branch of the BPSA where activities from sports competitions to conferences and formal balls are organised and open to all members. Attendance at the RPSGB local pharmacy branch meetings will also be encouraged where you have the opportunity to meet pharmacists in practice and keep abreast of issues currently affecting the profession.
