The Progression Module

What is it?

The Progression Module is a formal programme of study which gives Year 12 students the opportunity to investigate and research progression routes - primarily  into Higher Education.

What are the aims of the scheme?

The aims of the Progression Module are to:

  • Encourage progression into Higher Education for all students with the potential to benefit from it
  • Provide support for schools and enhance their Year 12 HE preparation programmes
  • Provide schools and their students with a structured and formalised Higher Education information and guidance programme
  • Enable students to make informed choices and decisions about their future
  • Provide formal recognition for the work undertaken by students in preparation for Higher Education (30 UCAS points)
  • Develop closer relationships between HEIs and local schools

How is it delivered?

The programme is delivered by teachers or tutors in school or college and is complemented by an optional series of workshops and visits delivered by University staff. Tutors are provided with training, and all relevant support materials required to deliver the programme.

The module comprises four separate units:

  • You and your career
  • Exploring your future
  • Managing your money
  • Marketing yourself

As a comprehensive HE preparation programme, the Progression Module is often delivered as part of PSHCEE, Careers education or enrichment sessions.

What are the benefits of the scheme?

The Module provides:

  • A structured and formalised Higher Education information and guidance programme which:
    • raises students’ awareness of HE
    • encourages students to research chosen courses of study
    • explores the financial issues surrounding Higher Education
    • helps students to make informed choices and
    • assists students with applications to university
  • Opportunities for skills development which will help students to succeed in a HE environment and beyond in the workplace e.g. group working, independent research, organisation, self analysis and presentation skills
  • Tutor and student files - incorporating a range of materials and activities to support both students and teachers
  • A series of workshops are offered by the University which complement the units studied
  • Formal recognition for activity already undertaken by most level 3 students anyway
  • Training and ongoing support for tutors/teachers delivering the scheme from the University
  • 30 UCAS points recognised by the University of Huddersfield, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds Trinity University College, and Bradford College

What is the cost?

The cost of the module is usually £32.50 per student. This fee is only a contribution towards the true costs of the scheme. These costs include:

  • Module materials and resource packs for all teachers and each student participating
  • Training and ongoing support for teachers
  • A launch event held in school or at the University
  • Ongoing administration of the scheme
  • The subscription charge that we pay to Leeds Metropolitan University
  • External moderation of students’ work
  • Invitation to a formal certificate ceremony to celebrate the successful completion of the scheme

In 2009/10, the scheme is subsidised in target schools through area Aimhigher funding in Calderdale and Kirklees. Please contact the coordinator for more details on subsidies. In addition, Aimhigher funding may be available through your schools’ budget. Wer also reccomend that you contact your schools’Aimhigher Coordinator to discuss funding availability.

Who can take part in the Progression Module?

The Module is designed for students in the first year of Advanced Level study programmes.

Any school or college that wishes to take part in the module is eligible providing they can fund the scheme and demonstrate the necessary commitment (time and staffing) to ensure its successful delivery.

Institutions select their own cohorts for the programme based on needs and benefits. Some institutions may feel it beneficial to run the programme with an entire year group, whilst others may select students based on specific criteria linked to Aimhigher. Alternatively, others may allow students to self select.

How much time will it take to complete the Progression Module?

The module is completed in one academic year. In total, students can expect to undertake between 35 and 70 hours of work over the course of the academic year; this will include both guided and independent study time.

Recognition

Students must submit a portfolio of work including assignments from each of the four units of study. Students are free to choose the most effective way of presenting their work. Based on assessment criteria and learning outcomes, work is continually assessed internally by teachers/tutors. Appointed Internal and External Moderators make the final decisions on assessment.

Students will be awarded 30 UCAS points upon successful completion of all four units. The University of Huddersfield, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds Trinity University College, and Bradford College will recognise and accept these points as part of the UCAS application process. Whilst other institutions may have some course exemptions, at the University of Huddersfield these points are accepted for all courses.

Following completion of the module, students are invited to attend a formal certificate ceremony, where they are presented with a certificate of achievement.

What students have said about the Module

“Before I started the module I didn’t really know much about universities or which course I wanted to do. The Progression Module has opened my eyes and made me realise how important my decisions are. If anyone is given the chance to do the module I would strongly urge them to do so.”

“Without the Progression Module I would not have gained research, presentation interview and IT skills which have made me more confident.”

“The Progression Module gave me really good preparation for the future. It is just as useful for students going into jobs at 18 as those who are going on to university.”

What teachers and tutors have said about the Module

“The students applying through UCAS for HE is up on last year’s figures. I consider this increase to have occurred as a direct result of the Progression Module. Learners are better informed. The structure of the investigations and application is far better using the Progression Module”

“Tutors have noted a marked difference in success of UCAS applications for those students who complete the progression Module. It is an invaluable part of our working practice.”
