Biography

Geoffrey Cox BMus, PhD
Studied Music at Liverpool Community College, then Huddersfield graduating with a 1st degree in Music in 1999 and a PhD in Composition in 2007, which explores the use of contemporary musical borrowing practices. He is a composer of both acoustic and electronic music in a variety of genres from avant-garde to more popular styles. Other specialisms include Popular Musicology (the history and effect of technological developments on popular music) and working with visual images in a musical context, work which has become increasingly important to his output.

Research & Scholarship

He has written 25 works or so over the last six years for purely acoustic means, for a mixture of electronic and acoustic forces, for ‘tape’ alone and for film soundtrack. In doing so he has drawn both on his experience as a popular musician, and deep interest in contemporary art music. His work, Tangled Air won first prize in the ICA’s AcoustICA composition competition (2001). He has written music for Ensemble QTR and the Marisienne Quartet, receiving performances at the Cheltenham Festival (2004) and in Estonia and Germany as well as the UK. He has collaborated with film maker Keith Marley (John Moores University) to produce soundtracks to five short films one of which, Introducing: W.C. Lowry, won Mersey Film and Video’s ‘Best of Merseyside 2000’. A more recent collaboration, 3 Rhythmic Etudes (2003-6) was shown at the 2006 Bradford International Film Festival and Cider Makers has been presented at four academic conferences since 2007. He has recently published a book chapter, co-authored with Keith Marley, on their work in CineMusic? Constructing the Film Score published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
